GUNTHER has addressed the negative reaction from some fans after defeating John Cena in his final WWE match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
After a year-long WWE farewell tour, John Cena’s legendary career wrapped up at the December 13 Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington D.C.
Unfortunately for the Cena fans in attendance at the Capitol One Arena, and watching on at home however, it was not a happy ending that they were given with Cena instead tapping out to GUNTHER – his first submission loss in WWE since 2004.
The result led to quite a bit of backlash from fans at Saturday Night’s Main Event, with audible boos after the bell, which got even louder ever time WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H was shown on screen.
While GUNTHER gave a confident address to the WWE fans during the opening segment of Monday’s Raw, he recently spoke more at length about his win over Cena during an interview with TMZ Sports.
When asked how it feels to have retired John Cena, GUNTHER said:
“It feels very good, you just mentioned 20 years, funnily enough in November I had my 20 year anniversary as a wrestler so I can claim for all those 20 years I prepared to make John Cena tap out, so it fits in to each other.”
GUNTHER was then asked about the negative reaction from fans to his win, describing the atmosphere as “tense”:
“Yeah it felt really good. It’s like I could tell the whole day already it’s different because my bus was parked outside the venue and I always had to be escorted through a bunch of people, a bunch of fans to get to the building.
“Usually when I leave the building and there’s people you get a bit of, ‘Ah boo GUNTHER aha’, but it felt tense from early in the day already, I could feel it felt tense. The people really wanted to see John win and really wanted to have that good feel moment at the end of it, but it didn’t happen. You don’t always get what you want.”
Discussing why he opted not to conceal his identity when leaving the arena, GUNTHER said:
“Oh yeah I wanted to embrace it a little bit. I could have hidden more or something, but it felt good to walk through the anger of the people.”
GUNTHER would later send a direct message to the fans that are upset about the outcome of Cena’s last match, telling them to “suck it up”:
“Suck it up.
“In German we’ve got a saying that says, ‘Everything’s got an end, but a sausage has got two’.
“So if you’ve been naive enough to think that all that Never Give Up stuff is going to hold up forever, then yeah, blame yourself. You’ve been naive enough.”
