GUNTHER has discussed the backlash he has received after retiring John Cena in his final WWE match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
John Cena competed in his final WWE match last weekend at Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he submitted to GUNTHER in his retirement match.
Both the company and GUNTHER have received a lot of backlash following the finish, and GUNTHER has now opened up on the backlash from fans after retiring Cena.
Speaking on the Ringer Wrestling Show, he said:
“I expected it at least. I mean the amount of it, I didn’t put a number down or something, but I knew it would create some distress from the fans.
“But that’s what it’s all about, it’s grown men crying, that’s the power of professional wrestling, and I guess to a big degree, the power of John Cena and the connection the fans have with him.
“It was good to take advantage of that, it was the most ideal outcome for me. In reality many people have beaten John Cena, and it was the day before I wrestled LA Knight, it dawned on me ‘you’re very close now, and how can you make a statement that’s different from everyone else’.
“And submitting Cena was the clear answer because he’s the man that never gives up, but nothing lasts forever, and that’s a reality that people struggle to face.
“I think with submitting Cena, someone told me the theory the other day, you kind of show people their own mortality a little bit, because for a lot of people John Cena was a big part of their life, big part of their grown up life or childhood, and it’s over now, and that subconsciously distressed people too, and that’s why people wanted a happy end, but there’s no running from reality.”
