G1 Supercard Main Event Changed

It’s safe to say that things have been a little turbulent in the wrestling industry as of late. What with talent leaving WWE, Jay White capturing the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, and the announcement of All Elite Wrestling, there’s been some pretty seismic shifts in the landscape of the squared circle.

Due to these turbulent happenings, it’s been reported via Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Radio that the planned main event for the G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden was going to be drastically different.

Originally, it appears as though Kenny Omega was due to retain his IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 13 and defend it in the main event of the G1 Supercard against long time nemesis Kazuchika Okada. As it is, Omega dropped the title to Hiroshi Tanahashi, who then subsequently dropped it to Jay White at New Beginning.

Reportedly, the current plan is now to have Jay White defend his title against the winner of the New Japan Cup, who at this point could be Tetsuya Naito, Kota Ibushi or Okada himself.

While this may have taken the wind out of the sails of ROH and NJPW’s G1 Supercard slightly, it no doubt will still be a fantastic show, and regardless, it’s still sold out Madison Square Garden. Which is still nuts.
