A former WWE star has recalled John Cena and WWE ‘cutting their legs off’ during an infamous storyline upon their debut.

When the Nexus made their debut in WWE in 2010, they were the hottest acts in the entire promotion, taking out John Cena on their first night.

However, the story would end up slowly losing steam, with many fans citing Cena’s team’s victory at SummerSlam as the beginning of the end of the group.

Former Nexus Member Speaks Out On The Story

Speaking on the F Y’All Podcast, former Nexus member Michael Tarver recalled the storyline ‘having it’s legs cut off’, specifically naming Cena as the reason for the storyline dying.

He said:

“One person. (John Cena) One person, I don’t work there no more I can tell the truth. I’ve been telling the truth the last 11 years since I left there, it was him. It was straight up him.

“Much respect to John Cena, but the truth is still the truth. So John Cena was kind of, he was kind of at point of the Nexus storyline, we were centering it around him, so he kind of took point. Which is great, that’s good, it’s John Cena. Problem is, it’s John Cena, and nobody’s perfect.

“So once the storyline got going, and we actually started to really get some traction, I felt like him beating us at SummerSlam was greedy, and he’s actually done interviews and said it was a mistake, he shouldn’t have done that. He said it himself, which I respect that, but it took a lot of people the past 11 years to be like ‘yo man, you killed something that would have been the biggest thing in a very long time, and what did it get you?’ It didn’t help you at all to kill us, it would have helped you more to (lose).

“In my opinion that storyline should have went all the way through to WrestleMania, and that match, we should have won, and we should have destroyed everything all the way through to WrestleMania. Then, put together a super team, go get the Avengers, Superman, and they come and beat the Nexus.

“Then from that point, with all seven-eight of us, they had enough to replenish the roster for the next generation of superstars. They had something in all of us that they could do, and instead they chose politics. It’s all good.”

Could The Nexus Have Been Major WWE Stars?

As the years have gone on, and the careers of the eight Nexus members have begun to come to a close, fans have looked back at what could have been with the group.

Since the group’s break up, only Daniel Bryan would go on to become a World Champion in WWE, while Wade Barrett would accumulate many Intercontinental Championships, and Heath Slater capturing many tag team titles.

While it is impossible to say what could have been with the individual members of the groups in the company if the story was handled better, WWE was very noticeably thin on newer stars during the early to mid 2010s, which could have opened the door for the rest of the group to achieve more success individually.
