The real reason that Cody Rhodes will face Randy Orton at WWE WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas next month has been revealed.

One of five matches announced so far, Randy Orton’s victory in the men’s Elimination Chamber match sees him challenge for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 42.

The latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has shed light on the creative decision behind Rhodes vs Orton.

According to Dave Meltzer, the injury of Bronson Reed was one of the main factors that consolidated plans into place for next month’s Premium Live Event, with the Observer writer stating:

The Bronson Reed injury for whatever reason was the clincher of the idea to go with Rhodes vs. Orton and McIntyre vs. Fatu in singles matches.

Rhodes vs. Orton was always the direction, but originally that was planned as Rhodes’ major program after WrestleMania.

Plans for McIntyre also shifted recently, with the star recently ‘quitting‘ after losing the Undisputed WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes on March 6, seeing the Scottish star miss out on a title defense at WrestleMania 42.

WrestleMania 42 Changes Cause WWE Concerns

A month away from WrestleMania 42, it was recently reported of ‘internal criticism‘ of Triple H within WWE.

A string of injuries hasn’t helped matters, with Reed and Bron Breakker both sidelined and leaving The Vision somewhat diminished.

Seth Rollins recently returned from injury to restart his feud with The Vision, with reports that Breakker was also working hard for a potential return, although a date is yet to be confirmed.

With injuries sidelining a smattering of established and prominent names, the former Baron Corbin recently called upon WWE to use newer stars ahead of WrestleMania 42.

Outside of the matches announced so far, plans for some top stars are still unclear, while Oba Femi gets his first WrestleMania moment as he faces Brock Lesnar.

Stephanie Vaquer will defend the Women’s World Championship in her first WrestleMania match, facing Liv Morgan, with all other matches featuring stars with their own records at the top WWE PLE.

While there may be concerns over this year’s two-night PLE, Cody Rhodes would state that the event could be one of the best Wrestlemania events of all time.

It certainly has a lot to live up to, with Allegiant Stadium also playing home to last year’s WrestleMania, touted as the ‘most successful event’ in WWE history.
