With his second reign now underway, the AEW star has revealed his plans for defending the title in an interview with The Takedown on SI, stating:

“I really want to have title matches per month, if I can do it more, I’m open to do it not only, like I said before, in Mexico, but also in other companies with this relationship.

“But I really, really want to make a lot of defenses with this championship, that’s something that I really want, and I also want to make a difference from the last time I was CMLL World Heavyweight Champion to this time. So I want this time to be different from the last one.”

The “other companies with this relationship” would likely see potential matches in AEW and Ring of Honor, both owned by Tony Khan, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling.

Hechicero’s previous CMLL World Heavyweight Championship run saw him defeat Ultimo Guerrero for the title in September 2021, holding it until his loss to Gran Guerrero in November of the following year.

A member of the Don Callis Family, Hechicero signed with AEW around September of last year, with the multi-year deal allowing him to also maintain his CMLL contract.

The Whole World Is A Stage For AEW Stars

Stars on the AEW roster benefit from being able to accept, availability permitting, independent bookings on the international wrestling scene.

Mercedes Moné has been a prime example of the success of this arrangement, having simultaneously held multiple championships around the world on the independent wrestling scene.

The reach of AEW and its partnerships with other companies opens up a potential world of opportunities for stars signed to Tony Khan’s company

It isn’t just the ability to perform elsewhere that is a strength of the AEW partnerships, but also the crossover shows, such as Forbidden Door, which offer the possibility of international ‘dream matches’ for its enthusiastic audience.

Hechicero’s willingness to define his current title reign by its variety can only stand the current CMLL World Heavyweight Champion in good stead to management in both of his home promotions.
