A top AEW star won his first championship with New Japan Pro Wrestling at NJPW STRONG Independence Day show at Korakuen Hall.

In a defence of the NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship, KENTA, who was over a month into his second reign with the title, took on Eddie Kingston in singles action.

Following an expectedly hard-hitting affair, it was the Mad King who got the win, defeating KENTA with a sheer-drop brainbuster.

The title is Kingston’s first since holding the Crown of Glory championship in mid 2019 and immediately following the conclusion of the match you could see the emotion on Kingston’s face as he burst into tears.

Kingston’s former LAX partner and close friend Homicide was on hand at ringside with the two men sharing a touching embrace afterwards.

With Kingston set to compete in this year’s G1 Climax tournament, this major win sets him off with massive momentum heading into the month-long event.

Although Kingston has been heavily involved in the ongoing feud between the Blackpool Combat Club and The Elite in recent weeks on AEW TV, due to his participation in the G1, which starts on July 15, he’s set to be absent from AEW TV heading into the summer.

Elsewhere on the NJPW STRONG Independence Day card another AEW star, Willow Nightingale was in action defending her NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship against Giulia.
