A notable NJPW star has teased a potential appearance at an upcoming AEW pay-per-view, answering Will Ospreay’s recent comments.
With AEW All In returning to London, England on Sunday, August 30, Will Ospreay recently reflected on the significance of his home city show.
In a new promo video shared by AEW, Ospreay looks back on his history and discusses this August’s show, before concluding:
“It’s time for me to lead AEW into a new generation.”
With the video hyping up Will Ospreay’s appearance at All In London, NJPW’s Callum Newman respond to his former mentor in a post on Twitter, stating:
“Essex boys be running wrestling right now
“I got your back if you got mine boss. @WillOspreay”
Ospreay would respond positively to Newman’s message, tweeting:
“I’ll always have yours.
“I’ll be there.”
Essex boys have, indeed, taken a prominent spot in wrestling at the time of writing.
Having been out of action since AEW Forbidden Door, also in London, last year, Will Ospreay returned at Revolution, targeting Jon Moxley and Death Riders.
As for Newman, his recent showing in the New Japan Cup saw him become the youngest NJPW star to win the tournament, with an IWGP Heavyweight Match against Yota Tsuji set to take place at Sakura Genesis on April 4.
The Fractious Relationship Between Mentor & Former Protégé
At just 23 years old, Callum Newman has been a member of the NJPW roster since 2023 and is the current leader of United Empire, the faction formed by Ospreay and Great-O-Khan.
The United Empire founder and former leader, Ospreay has found himself at odds with Newman over recent months, with a recent trip to NJPW seeing a tense moment in which his former protégé seemingly close to striking the Aerial Assassin with a steel chair at New Year Dash in January.
Ospreay has been instrumental in the development of Newman, convincing the parents of the then-teenage trainee to continue with wrestling training at a point where he wanted to quit.
Described as the “next Will Ospreay” by many, Newman made his feelings clear on the AEW star in an NJPW interview after winning the New Japan Cup, saying that while there has been more contact between he and Ospreay since his appearance at New Year Dash, he did leave for a “rival company”, and that the United Empire is Newman’s now.
Newman would also state that everything he’s accomplished has been “off my own back, not his”, suggesting that their fractious relationship is far from being close to repaired, but their recent interactions have suggested a positive direction
Whether Newman will play a part at AEW All In at Wembley Stadium remains to be seen, but the working relationship with NJPW continues to go from strength to strength.
