AEW has confirmed the main event for Full Gear 2026, with Will Ospreay set to defend his world title against Kyle Fletcher.
Ahead of the November 14 event, it’s interesting to look back at previous Full Gear headline matches and speculate about what this year’s bout will have in store for fans.
Here are the stories behind every AEW Full Gear main event.
2019 – Jon Moxley vs Kenny Omega: Unsanctioned Lights Out match
The first AEW Full Gear event was headlined by a major one-on-one encounter, with Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley facing off in an Unsanctioned “Lights Out” match.
Moxley was ultimately victorious in this bout, with the star hitting a Paradigm Shift on the exposed wooden boards of the ring.
Jon Moxley became the second ever AEW World Champion a few months later, defeating Chris Jericho for the gold at Revolution in February 2020.
2020 – Jon Moxley vs Eddie Kingston: AEW World Championship “I Quit” match
Jon Moxley continued his Full Gear win streak at Full Gear 2021, defeating Eddie Kingston in an I Quit match to retain the AEW World Championship.
Following almost 19 minutes of action, Moxley used a choke hold and barbed wire to force his friend to submit.
This match had the difficult task of taking place during a crowdless arena during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet both stars told an emotional yet violent story.
2021 – Kenny Omega vs “Hangman” Adam Page: AEW World Championship
The culmination of Full Gear 2021 saw Hangman Adam Page reach the top of the AEW mountain, with Page finally defeating Kenny Omega to win the AEW World Championship.
The closing moments of the bout saw Matt Jackson give Page a nod of approval and not interfering, allowing the challenger to hit a Buckshot Lariat to become AEW World Champion.
This title reign lasted for 197 days, ahead of Page losing the gold to CM Punk at Double or Nothing in May 2022.
2022 – Jon Moxley vs MJF: AEW World Championship
Jon Moxley’s luck finally ran out in 2022, with the star losing his first Full Gear main event match.
Moxley defended his AEW World Championship against MJF, with William Regal in the then-Blackpool Combat Club’s member.
William Regal ultimately betrayed Jon Moxley, sliding brass knuckles to MJF, which the challenger used to win AEW’s top title.
2023 – MJF vs Jay White: AEW World Championship
MJF walked into Full Gear 2023 as AEW World Champion, with Jay White challenging for the gold at this show.
While the champion was successful in his defense, his victory was a pyrrhic one, with MJF reportedly “banged up” after hitting an elbow drop to the outside.
MJF lost the AEW World Title shortly after, losing to Samoa Joe in the main event of the first Worlds End pay-per-view.
2024 – Jon Moxley vs Orange Cassidy: AEW World Championship
Jon Moxley was back in the main event for Full Gear 2024, defending the AEW World Title against Orange Cassidy.
Moxley was victorious, defeating Cassidy via pinfall after just over 19 minutes of action.
Following this bout, Moxley and Wheeler Yuta continued to attack Cassidy, leading to Adam Page running down and taking out Yuta, and Christian Cage dropping Moxley.
While it looked like Cage was about to cash in his AEW World Championship contract, Jay White took him out before the match could be made official.
2025 – “Hangman” Adam Page vs Samoa Joe: AEW World Championship Steel Cage match
The most recent AEW Full Gear main event ended with a title change, in a match which “Hangman” Adam Page entered as world champion.
The titleholder was dethroned by Samoa Joe, with the Samoan Submission Machine prevailing in their Steel Cage bout.
Samoa Joe dropped the gold to MJF in a four-way match at Worlds End one month later.
