On the September 15 edition of WWE NXT, General Manager Robert Stone announced the return of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

This year’s tournament will feature pairings from WWE NXT, Raw, SmackDown and Lucha Libre AAA.

This news led to many fans questioning the status of the WWE NXT and TNA Wrestling working relationship.

At the start of 2025, both promotions agreed to an official partnership that has seen stars crossing over on each other’s television.

From Jordynne Grace debuting in the Royal Rumble Match to Joe Hendry’s surprise appearance at WrestleMania 31, this helped to bring more exposure to TNA.

That eventually led to the company signing a media rights deal with AMC Network in early 2026.

Since then, WWE NXT’s presence on TNA television has slowed down tremendously.

However, signs have pointed to this working relationship never working out.

WWE has worked several different companies in the past that has led to some drastic results.

ECW, NWA and USWA were all associate companies to WWE in the 1990s.

WWE had talent appear on their partners’ television, but these relationships led to the downfall of all three companies.

In the end, WWE took the biggest stars from these promotions and left them out to dry to many fans.

Ohio Valley Wrestling was on the rise as an independent promotion before WWE took it on as a developmental territory.

OVW helped to establish the likes of Brock Lesnar, Batista, Randy Orton and John Cena before they made their WWE debut.

Thanks to creative differences and operational shift, WWE consolidated and ended their relationship with OVW to instead focus on FCW.

Evolve was considered one of the biggest independent promotions in the world during the 2010s when WWE established a partnership.

WWE took stars from the company, such as Johnny Gargano, Keith Lee and Matt Riddle.

After the promotion shut down, WWE has since made Evolve one of their brands.

During this time period, WWE made working relationships with the likes of PROGRESS, wXw and more.

Using these indie promotions, WWE created the NXT UK brand that slowly helped to dilute the rise of the UK independent scene.

Several of top promotions would shut down as a result of NXT UK, which went on to close its doors in 2022.

There are other examples of WWE’s partners that hasn’t worked out, but these should have been cautionary tales for TNA Wrestling.

TNA came into this partnership with optimism and did gain a lot from the partnership.

The company garnered their best TV rights deal in years with AMC in January 2026.

This came as a result to many fans thanks to their partnership with WWE NXT.

Having the likes of Trick Williams, Kelani Jordan and Jacy Jayne appearing on TNA IMPACT led to more fans discovering the company.

Even after moving to AMC, more NXT stars continued to appear in TNA Wrestling.

The recent turnaround and lack of WWE stars appearing on TNA television has caused attention to be part on this relationship.

It remains to be seen what is next for WWE and TNA working together, but it feels like fans are seeing the slow decline in what was established at the start of 2025.
