WWE's GUNTHER and John Cena after final match

After forcing John Cena into submission in the legendary star’s final WWE match, there could be more legends on GUNTHER’s hit list.

From top names that are potentially departing soon, to someone else who could return immediately gunning for GUNTHER, there are some interesting choices as to where “The Ring General” could go next.

Here are seven WWE stars for GUNTHER to retire after John Cena.

7. AJ Styles

While many WWE stars are only rumored to be heading towards retirement in 2026, one name that we know for sure is intending to hang up his boots is AJ Styles.

With Styles reportedly set to see his current WWE contract expire in early 2026, he has publicly announced that his legendary career will come to an end next year.

After retiring Goldberg and John Cena, it might be GUNTHER who targets AJ Styles over the coming weeks leading to a bout between them at a later date, perhaps even at WrestleMania 42.

Even if the Austrian is not Styles’ final opponent, GUNTHER could still be an engaging feud for Styles at some point before he retires, particularly with GUNTHER coming off of his Cena victory.

6. R-Truth

One WWE legend that could be the next to fall to GUNTHER could be R-Truth.

After fan outcry brought R-Truth back to WWE screens in June, he hasn’t featured in a lot of storylines but his appearances have been meaningful.

Potentially looking to engage in his own retirement tour, it would be a clever spin for him to feature in his own John Cena style farewell and then to meet the same fate.

Tapping out to GUNTHER, it would be another legend that “The Ring General” adds to his list of beloved stars he’s put away for good.

5. The Miz

A two-time WWE Grand Slam Champion, fans continue to come around to the idea that The Miz is absolutely a legend in the company.

Potentially able to come around as a fan favorite in the future, it could be fascinating to see the audience fall in love with The Miz — only to end up tangling with GUNTHER.

With his reputation proceeding him, it would be interesting to see The Miz attempt to survive what the other legends like Goldberg and John Cena before him could not.

Ultimately meeting their same fate and being retired by GUNTHER, The Miz would have definitely had an opportunity to show his skills before he departs.

4. Roman Reigns

Although GUNTHER has been known to be unafraid of the rest of the WWE roster, he hasn’t really tangled with Roman Reigns.

There could be a major opportunity for the pair to have a huge match and certainly strongly allude to the fact that GUNTHER is aiming to retire Roman Reigns.

In what could end up being a false claim in the end, an in-ring return from Roman Reigns after many months of departure after losing a match to GUNTHER could be an incredible surprise twist.

With Roman Reigns unlikely to officially retire from in-ring competition in the near future, the swerve could be a fun way to write him off of TV ahead of his next big Hollywood project.

3. Chris Jericho

If the rumors and reports prove true, Chris Jericho could be making a return to WWE in the near future — possibly for a specific retirement storyline.

Last being seen on AEW TV back in April, Jericho’s contract with Tony Khan’s company is reported to expire at the end of 2025, making way for a potential WWE return in early 2026.

Potentially set to take on a number of big names, it could be that near the end of his own farewell style tour that the legendary Jericho will come face-to-face with GUNTHER.

Able to put on a fantastic feud, it would be a fascinating dynamic to witness between the two and their vastly different take on professional wrestling.

2. Kevin Owens

WWE star Kevin Owens

After spending most of 2025 on the sidelines following neck surgery, fans were delighted to see Kevin Owens appear in the front row at Saturday Night’s Main Event, with KO giving John Cena a hug before his last match.

Owens was still at ringside during the post match scenes of Cena’s farewell, so there could possibly be a fascinating story told of Owens wanting to get back into in-ring action — only to be relatively swiftly targeted by GUNTHER upon his return.

Able to have an extended feud given Owens’ penchant for psychological violence just as much as physical assault, seeing KO return to try avenge the lost legends could be a great deal of fun.

Pun intended of course as GUNTHER is already drawing comparison’s to the Marvel evil-doer Thanos as “The Ring General” collects veterans’ retirements like infinity stones, perhaps Owens could be next on his hit list.

1. Brock Lesnar

Potentially the next legend to be retired by GUNTHER, it could be that Brock Lesnar is nearing the end of his WWE career.

With reports noting that Brock Lesnar’s current WWE contract is set to expire in 2026, Lesnar could be on the verge of kicking off his own retirement run ahead of next year’s SummerSlam in his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Potentially tangling with GUNTHER now and winning their showdown, the match-up could come back around again in the future as Lesnar nears his actual departure.

Bringing a long-term story back around between the pair of behemoths could be a fun way to see GUNTHER ultimately retire another legend in the form of “The Beast”.
