The wrestling world changed in 2019 when AEW rose as a viable competitor to WWE — the first since WCW closed its doors in 2001.
In the years that followed, battle lines were drawn, with fans taking sides on their favourite of the two promotions.
Much like during the late ’90s wrestling war, it also gave fans the chance to speculate: what would a supershow between the two companies look like – what dream matches could be concocted?
Just as it was with WCW and WWE in the ’90s, it remains highly unlikely — but below are the matches that could set the pro wrestling world alight.
6. Jon Moxley Vs. Roman Reigns

Given their shared history, this is a bout that makes itself.
The pair haven’t shared a ring since The Shield’s Final Chapter in April 2019 and haven’t faced off one-on-one since WWE’s Survivor Series 2015.
Since then, both have become significantly bigger stars —Reigns arguably becoming the biggest name in wrestling, while Moxley has completely reinvented himself, capturing world championships in both AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Surely a shoo-in for any crossover event between the two companies would be this match.

5. Kenny Omega Vs. AJ Styles

Kenny Omega has long expressed his desire to face WWE’s AJ Styles.
The two share history from New Japan Pro-Wrestling – Omega infamously turned on Styles, kicking him out of Bullet Club to seize control of the faction himself.
They’ve only had one singles match previously, back in 2006 in a small indie bout that Omega has credited as the match that convinced him to continue pursuing pro wrestling.
A dream match between two generational talents who have both evolved, elevated and come to define the in-ring style of contemporary pro-wrestling.

4. Toni Storm Vs. IYO SKY

Toni Storm and IYO SKY — as Io Shirai — have faced each other seven times in one-on-one bouts, spanning their time together in both Stardom and WWE’s NXT.
Already excellent in-ring workers, a lot has changed since their last meeting in NXT in March 2021.
Both have since become the standout female stars in their respective companies, each holding their brand’s world title.
A champion vs. champion bout between Storm and SKY could easily steal the show at an AEW vs. WWE crossover event.

3. GUNTHER vs. Konosuke Takeshita

A very legitimate argument could be made that WWE’s GUNTHER and AEW’s Konosuke Takeshita are the best in-ring workers in their respective companies.
One thing that’s beyond dispute is their status as the hardest hitters – GUNTHER’s violent chops and Takeshita’s ferocious forearms both explode like shotgun blasts through arenas.
Having made their names on opposite sides of the wrestling world – GUNTHER on the European indies, Takeshita in Japan’s DDT Pro Wrestling – the two have never shared a ring.
A meeting between this heavy-hitting pair would be a true dream match for any crossover show.

2. Mercedes Moné Vs. Stephanie Vaquer

Mercedes Moné and Stephanie Vaquer have already met twice – the first in New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Resurgence in May 2023, and then again at AEW’s Forbidden Door PPV in June 2024.
It was these bouts that put Vaquer on the global wrestling radar – it was her standout performance at Forbidden Door, arguably outshining her bigger-name opponent, that ultimately earned her a WWE contract.
That same match also marked the start of Moné’s hot streak, which has seen her collect titles across multiple promotions and deliver unfailingly outstanding in-ring performances — cementing her status as, arguably, the greatest female wrestler North America has ever produced.
The marquee value of a third match between the pair at a WWE / AEW crossover event is undeniable.

1. Will Ospreay Vs. Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins and Will Ospreay have never shared a ring, but they do share a somewhat chequered history – trading insults on social media in 2019.
Their online beef was eventually squashed and in 2023 Rollins publicly encouraged Ospreay to join WWE as his New Japan contract neared its end.
Today, both men are arguably the best in-ring workers in their respective companies.
A first-time bout between the pair would be the top dream match of any AEW and WWE crossover event.
