With WWE Survivor Series 2025 set to be the last premium live event appearance for John Cena before retirement, his opponent isn’t yet known.
From the rumored creative direction to going an entirely different route for the event, there are some intriguing options as to what John Cena could do at the event in San Diego, California at Petco Park.
Here are five potential WWE Survivor Series 2025 plans for John Cena.
5. John Cena vs. Dominik Mysterio For Intercontinental Championship
One match that fans have been looking forward to seeing is John Cena taking on Dominik Mysterio.
With the Intercontinental Championship the final missing piece to completing Cena’s WWE Grand Slam, it would seem destined to happen before he retires.
While it has been reported that Cena was originally set to face off against Dirty Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship at Survivor Series, it could be that the plans have been scrapped.
With the return of Rey Mysterio to WWE Raw — and seemingly returning to feud with his son Dominik, it could be that there is something else entirely set for Cena at Survivor Series.

4. War Games Swerve
In an interesting note, one other absence from the career of John Cena is participating in a WarGames match.
While there were reports of the originally planned teams, it seems that Seth Rollins’ injury will cause things to shift on the heel side. But on the babyface side, there is also a potential vacancy to fill if Jacob Fatu isn’t medically cleared to return to action after dental surgery.
Potentially using the WarGames match as a unique opportunity for John Cena to lead a team of WWE Avengers to victory, it could actually be CM Punk, John Cena, Jey Uso, Roman Reigns & Cody Rhodes who end up the final field of babyfaces.
Taking on the heel team of Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, Logan Paul, Brock Lesnar and Drew McIntyre would end up encompassing a lot of feuds both past, present and future for Cena’s last PLE appearance.

3. John Cena vs. Finn Balor vs. Dominik Mysterio vs. Rey Mysterio For Intercontinental Championship
With John Cena set for appearances on the next two episodes of WWE Raw in advance of Survivor Series — perhaps he ends up becoming the catalyst for the demise of the long suffering Judgment Day faction.
Poised to be able to remind Finn Balor of his career achievements in a way that could motivate but also inspire resentment towards Dirty Dom, there could be a new element to the story.
Potentially bringing about a scenario which sees a big fatal-four way match for the Intercontinental Championship, Cena will have to battle through an impressive field if he hopes to claim his first IC title.
Leaving room for some intriguing action between John Cena and Finn Balor, a singles bout that hasn’t happen on the retirement tour to date – Survivor Series could end up being a historic match.

2. John Cena vs. Jeff Hardy
With the ‘Last Time Is Now’ tournament set to kick off during John Cena’s last two appearances on WWE Raw, there could be some surprise entrants who have face-to-face interactions with Cena.
One dream opponent for this final set of appearances might be TNA Wrestling star, Jeff Hardy.
While Matt and Jeff Hardy continue to appear for TNA Wrestling — including crossovers with NXT — it could be that a main roster surprise could be in the works in the future.
Certainly with some compelling emotional storytelling that could happen in the interim, Cena vs. Hardy would be a very fun match to see before the end of John Cena’s in-ring career.

1. John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar with The Rock
While the character of John Cena was always a babyface throughout his career, this last year saw him brave a brand new world when he turned heel.
With his dastardly actions seemingly coming at the behest of The Final Boss, there wasn’t a ton of resolve from a narrative perspective as to why it happened or how it fell apart between the two WWE icons.
Cena seemingly found himself ahead of SummerSlam 2025 where he dropped the Undisputed WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes before being attacked by Brock Lesnar.
While Brock Lesnar’s actions have never been explained — it could end up being the Cena gets a win back over Lesnar as The Rock — the mastermind of the attack, watches on to close out the storyline.
