John Cena is set to retire on December 13 at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.

The 48-year-old will face Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza on September 20, and after that has only five WWE appearances left before his two-and-a-half decade career comes to a close.

So what are the plans for his final months as he moves ever closer to retirement?

Here are seven potential plans for the end of John Cena’s WWE career.

7. John Cena’s Feud With Brock Lesnar Continues

At Wrestlepalooza, John Cena is set to take on career rival Brock Lesnar.

Facing each other for the first time in 2001, together the two have delivered some of the most memorable matches of their respective careers – including Lesnar’s return bout at Extreme Rules 2012 and their brutal one-sided encounter at SummerSlam 2014.

But will Wrestlepalooza be the last time they meet?

With Cena set to appear at WWE Crown Jewel Perth in October, their rivalry could yet continue – and perhaps finally be buried in Australia.

6. A Final Bout With AJ Styles

There’s a strong argument that AJ Styles is John Cena’s greatest in-ring rival – the opponent who brought out the very best in him.

Their clashes at Money in the Bank and SummerSlam 2016 were widely celebrated classics, changing the minds of many of Cena’s most ardent critics when it came to his in-ring ability.

Given that history, it would certainly be fitting to see one final encounter before Cena hangs up his boots.

Could Styles be his opponent at WWE Crown Jewel in Perth?

5. John Cena Teams With CM Punk

Another potential plan for John Cena at WWE Crown Jewel in Perth could see him compete in an all-star tag team match.

On the show, he could join forces with another of his most storied career rivals, CM Punk.

Cena aligning with Punk in his feud against The Vision faction – taking on Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker – would be a huge draw.

Such a bout could also set the stage for Cena’s final Survivor Series appearance the following month.

4. John Cena Enters Survivor Series ‘WarGames’

In his final Survivor Series appearance, John Cena could step into his very first WarGames match.

It appears that this year’s WarGames will see The Vision take on some combination of CM Punk, The Usos and Roman Reigns.

Could Cena be added to what is sure to be a violent and brutal affair?

However, there are still other possibilities for WWE’s plans for Cena at Survivor Series.

3. John Cena Battles Gunther At Survivor Series

WWE World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER

According to the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, Gunther is set to return “very soon” – and that return could even come as soon as Wrestlepalooza.

Could the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion emerge as one of John Cena’s final opponents, battling him at Survivor Series ?

Gunther’s brutal, hard-hitting style against an aging Cena would tell a compelling story, with the legend struggling to withstand the onslaught.

A meeting between the pair at Survivor Series would be a big-time match and could deliver a standout in-ring affair.

2. John Cena Challenges Seth Rollins For The World Title

If WWE decides to have John Cena enter WarGames against The Vision, there’s a chance he could pin WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins.

That would open the door to one final title challenge for Cena against Rollins.

His farewell match at Saturday Night’s Main Event could then double as a chance to become an 18-time World Champion.

However, there is perhaps a more likely option…

1. John Cena Takes On Bron Breakker In Final Bout

It is widely known that Bron Breakker is next up in WWE, the star pegged as the company’s next WrestleMania main eventer; the man to replace Cody Rhodes.

Yet as a member of The Vision faction, he is still awaiting that one defining victory to elevate him into the stratosphere of WWE stardom.

That moment could come by beating John Cena in his final bout.

As is traditionally the case when a performer retires, Cena may well go out on his back – and if so, doing the honors for Breakker could cement him as WWE’s next top star.
