With John Cena finally capturing the WWE Intercontinental Championship on WWE Raw, he will definitely have challengers ahead.
From stars already in the hunt for the title to others who could pop-up only to challenge the legendary Cena — there could be some interesting faces looking for an IC title match.
Here are seven WWE stars that could challenge John Cena for the Intercontinental Championship on WWE Raw.
7. Sheamus

A fellow WWE veteran who seemed interested in taking on John Cena for the Intercontinental Championship was Sheamus.
Spotted in the initial scene of Cena going backstage after the win, he would later note that he wanted a title shot against Cena.
Sheamus was previously in the same boat as Cena, never having won the IC title and thereby having the WWE Grand Slam elude him.
With the potential for the two WWE legends to have another major match before Cena retires, it could be the perfect way for Sheamus to also capture his first Intercontinental Championship and WWE Grand Slam.

6. Dominik Mysterio

While Dominik Mysterio may have lost the Intercontinental Championship to John Cena on the November 10 edition of WWE Raw — he is unlikely to let the loss go.
Possibly popping back up to challenge John Cena to a rematch at the upcoming November 17 episode of WWE Raw from New York City, Mysterio could get his rematch.
Although while it could be better for him to delay their bout until Cena heads to Mysterio’s home turf of San Diego, California for the upcoming Survivor Series WarGames — it isn’t clear if Cena will end up finding himself in the multi-man battle.
With the recent return of Rey Mysterio potentially halting Dom’s ability to get his hands on Cena — Dirty Dom will no doubt at least attempt to get a re-match.

5. Rusev

A recent contender in the hunt for the Intercontinental Championship has been Rusev.
After a near win at Saturday Night’s Main Event, it would definitely make sense to see Rusev still looking for a shot at the IC title.
Perhaps now more enticing than ever — renewing an old rivalry with John Cena — Rusev already has a solid potential future date to dance with the 17x World Champion.
Winning his first round matchup against Damian Priest, Rusev has already advanced to the next round of the Last Time Is Now tournament to determine who will be Cena’s final opponent. Also advancing, Sheamus after besting Shinsuke Nakamura.

4. Brock Lesnar

Another huge name in WWE’s history that sailed past ever capturing the Intercontinental Championship is Brock Lesnar.
Brock Lesnar is a wild card that no one on the WWE roster is entirely sure what he could be doing next — but if previous reported Survivor Series WarGames plans are to be believed, The Beast is set to return.
Possibly in pursuit of John Cena yet again — after he initially returned at SummerSlam to attack Cena, then effectively squashed him at WWE Wrestlepalooza — maybe Cena vs. Lesnar III in 2025 will be for the IC title.
More likely there is some future showdown between the pair coming in the upcoming Survivor Series WarGames match but Lesnar could be looking to add to his list of achievements as well.

3. PENTA

It seems highly unlikely that whoever faces John Cena won’t find their match interrupted by Dominik Mysterio but one name that could bring the story all together is PENTA.
After coming close in the recent Saturday Night’s Main Event title bout between Dirty Dom, Rusev & PENTA — it could be that a showdown with John Cena is next up.
Never having faced Cena, a bout for the Intercontinental Championship in New York City on the November 17 edition of WWE Raw would be an achievement for the veteran, even if he ended up losing to the retiring star.
Able to continue to fight another day, the momentum behind PENTA doesn’t seem at risk of slowing down, even if he were to face off and lose via potential DQ to John Cena.

2. Austin Theory

Reportedly set to be on the originally planned heel team along with The Vision’s Seth Rollins, Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed was Austin Theory.
While creative plans have had to shift in the wake of Rollins’ injury, it remains unclear if Theory is still set to make a return to TV in the near future.
With Logan Paul seemingly replacing Rollins, there are still two looming spots for the heel side of the upcoming WarGames match.
Given the perfect opportunity for Theory to return to challenge John Cena directly — potentially roping them both into the upcoming WarGames battle — Austin Theory could be coming back to haunt Cena soon.

1. Kofi Kingston

If there isn’t going to be a random surprise appearing to challenge Cena on his last appearance on WWE Raw, it should be someone that he has never faced.
An interesting detail about the current WWE roster is that Kofi Kingston has never actually had a one-on-one bout against John Cena.
Since Kingston as well as New Day partner Xavier Woods have taken a turn to the dark side over the past year, it could be the perfect time for the showdown to finally happen.
Able to make a surprise interruption of Cena to issue a challenge, the pair of WWE legends could have an enjoyable match that causes no harm to Kingston for losing.
