At WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event GUNTHER will make history by doing battle with John Cena in his final match, but what could come next for “The Ring General” after the dust settles in Washington D.C.?
From trying to reclaim his lost WWE Championship, to targeting a brand new legend, there are some interesting possibilities for what could be next for GUNTHER.
Here are six potential WWE plans for GUNTHER after John Cena’s final match.
6. Attacks CM Punk

One potential future target for GUNTHER may be to tangle again with CM Punk.
While it was CM Punk who initially took the World Heavyweight Championship from GUNTHER at SummerSlam 2025, the pair have not had a rematch since the Austrian’s return from injury.
Potentially looking to move from one legend to another, GUNTHER could be looking to pick a fight with CM Punk when he is through facing John Cena at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Punk is already set to face Bron Breakker at the first anniversary of WWE Raw on Netflix January 5th, but potentially GUNTHER could look to disrupt the proceedings.

5. Taking on AJ Styles

Among the rumored WWE names that could be retiring in the near future, one name that has come up is AJ Styles.
With Styles reportedly set to see his current WWE contract expire in early 2026, he has made clear his intention to hang up his boots for good in the coming year.
After retiring Goldberg and John Cena, it might be GUNTHER who targets AJ Styles over the coming weeks leading to a bout between them at a later date.
Perhaps not Styles’ final opponent, GUNTHER could still be an engaging final feud for Styles, particularly with GUNTHER coming off of his potential Cena victory.

4. New Legend Killer Feud

A distraction from being putting out WWE fans’ childhood favorites, GUNTHER could end up going toe-to-toe with Randy Orton next.
If GUNTHER adds John Cena to the growing list of WWE icons that he has officially retired, he could stake a claim at becoming a brand new “Legend Killer”.
With Orton previously having taken up the moniker in his younger years, GUNTHER’s biggest opponent yet could end up being “The Viper” himself.
While it doesn’t seem that Orton is at any risk of slowing down and therefore could evade taking a major loss to GUNTHER — their rivalry would definitely not be over.

3. Target Bron Breakker

While GUNTHER has a potential rematch for the World Heavyweight Championship in his future, it could very well be against Bron Breakker.
Since Breakker is set to face Punk for the title on January 5th first anniversary of WWE Raw on Netflix, perhaps GUNTHER will find himself targeted by The Vision next.
While heel-on-heel violence isn’t typical, it could be the defining moment needed for Bron Breakker to strike out as a babyface.
With Breakker potentially being backstabbed out of The Vision by whoever is revealed as the masked man taking out their enemies — a turn for Breakker could be coming soon.

2. New Imperium

The Ring General could end up recruiting a fascinating group to become his latest soldiers on the main roster.
With several indie talent having been signed by WWE from the UK that could debut directly to the main roster such as Mike Derudder or Jaime Garcia, there could be a new Imperium on the rise.
Potentially taking on a babyface version of American Made when Chad Gable returns, there could also be a fascinating feud with a familiar face.
Los Americanos (Ludwig Kaiser, Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate) could certainly also prove to be future rivals of GUNTHER’s new group.

1. Set Up Retirement Feud With Brock Lesnar

It is possible that instead of picking up Randy Orton’s discarded ‘Legend Killer’ moniker, he could instead target a different designation — “Beast Killer”.
With reports noting that Brock Lesnar’s current WWE contract is set to expire in 2026, it could be that Lesnar is headed to a retirement run himself.
Potentially tangling with GUNTHER now and defeating him, the match-up could come back around again in the future as Lesnar nears his actual farewell.
Setting up a long-term story that would be a lot more for Lesnar’s eventual retirement match, there could be some really interesting storytelling from point A to point B.
