Former WWE Tag Team Champions To Return To The Company

On the second night of SummerSlam, WWE is set to promote a six-team TLC match for the Tag Team Championships featuring The Wyatt Sicks vs. Andrade & Fenix vs. The Motor City Machine Guns vs. #DIY vs. The Street Profits vs. Fraxiom.

This match could be the show-stealer of the two-night card and highlights just how stacked the SmackDown tag division currently is.

By contrast, Raw’s tag division could use a significant injection of depth — and one way to do that would be by bringing back former tag team champions.

Below are former champions who could return to the company.

Dolph Ziggler

Dolph Ziggler was best known as a singles star in WWE, but he had three reigns with the tag team titles alongside Drew McIntyre and Robert Roode.

Since leaving WWE – as Nic Nemeth – he’s teamed with brother Ryan in TNA, where the pair captured the promotion’s tag titles.

As a heel duo, the Nemeth brothers have proven themselves a highly effective team.

With a WWE return for Ziggler seeming inevitable, could we see Ryan join him — and “The Zigglers” enter Raw’s tag division?

The Hardy Boys

At TNA’s Slammiversary PPV, The Hardys once again captured the Tag Team Championships – their fourth reign in the company.

Beloved by the TNA audience, their thrilling four-team ladder match proved they can still deliver in-ring when paired with the right opponents.

Through WWE and TNA’s ongoing relationship, they’ve already appeared on NXT earlier this year — to huge fanfare from the live audience.

Legends in WWE and still wildly popular, it seems only a matter of time before they return full-time for one final run.

Buddy Matthews

Buddy Matthews’ WWE run saw him win tag team gold in both NXT and on Raw, where he had a reign alongside Seth Rollins.

Matthews was reportedly a favourite of Paul Heyman backstage, a star he wanted to build around, during his short stint as Raw’s executive director, and a return could see the 36-yearold slotted into Heyman’s faction.

Despite signing a new AEW deal last year, Matthews has previously expressed frustration and requested his release.

Currently out with injury, a future WWE return seems likely — and could once again see him paired with Rollins in a supporting role.

The Dudley Boyz

Bully Ray recently appeared at TNA’s Slammiversary PPV, issuing a challenge to The Hardys for one final match between themselves and the Dudleys — which he hyperbolically claimed would be “the last great tag team match of all time.”

He emphasised that it would be the final time the Dudleys “get the tables.”

With D‑Von suffering significant long-term health issues, this looks to be a one-time thing, and a final WWE run for the duo is not on the cards.

However, since Bully Ray is already on WWE’s payroll as a coach on LFG, could a new Dudley be added to the family for a run in the tag team division?

Billy Gunn

AEW star and WWE legend Billy Gunn

Recent years have seen Billy Gunn enjoy a career resurgence as part of The Acclaimed in AEW — finding more relevance than he’s had in decades.

That said, the former 11-time WWE Tag Team Champion was always likely to return to the company at some point.

More intriguing than Gunn returning solo would be if he brought his sons back with him.

The Gunns have proven themselves a charismatic, effective tag team — and could make a real impact in WWE’s tag division once their AEW contracts expire.
