With the road to WWE WrestleMania 42 already poised to be paved with twists and turns, there may be a suprising opponent set for Cody Rhodes.
From old foes coming back around again to a familiar face hisfrom days in AEW that might be back to haunt him, there could be some big stories coming soon for the now-former Undisputed WWE Champion.
Here seven potential opponents for Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42.
7. Drew McIntyre
While their feud has been heating up over the past few months, it doesn’t seem over just because McIntyre bested Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
With a potential showdown ahead for the title, perhaps their rematch won’t come until WrestleMania 42.
Depending on what happens in the Royal Rumble, it could be that if McIntyre continues to hold on to the WWE Championship until Las Vegas, he could be forced to face Rhodes.
Cody Rhodes could certainly make history by joining Stone Cold Steve Austin as the only other man in WWE history who has won the Royal Rumble three times.

6. Brock Lesnar
With the potential retirement of Brock Lesnar looming, there could be a massive showdown at WrestleMania 42 with Cody Rhodes to mark the occasion.
Possibly serving as a the kick-off to a farewell that could end in Minneapolis at SummerSlam 2026, there could be another showdown between Rhodes and Lesnar.
With Cody having taken the series in their last trio of meetings in 2023, interestingly the sole Lesnar victory at Night of Champions in Jeddah was via referee’s decision.
Possibly setting the stage for some intrigue into their fourth showdown, WrestleMania 42 could prove pivotal to whether the rivalry continues or concludes once and for all.

5. Roman Reigns
A potential showdown that could come back around in Las Vegas, perhaps there will be a third match between two of WWE’s biggest stars.
With rumors that Cody Rhodes may be set to go up against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42, it could be interesting to see that bout without a title on the line.
While it could take a little storyline finagling to get the duo into a heated feud, the pair have such a tenuous allyship that it would seem easy to spark.
Whether through an outright attack or some other more emotionally evocative reason for conflict, this match could be historic even without gold on the line.

4. Chris Jericho
With the potential that Chris Jericho could be making his return to WWE in the near future, a logical next question is who his first feud could be up against.
One intriguing choice might be for Chris Jericho to immediately target Cody Rhodes with the ability for Jericho to fictionalize all kinds of animosity towards Rhodes.
Able to put together plenty of reason to be bitter towards Rhodes for ‘abandoning him’ in AEW perhaps, Jericho could certainly play up a sympathy card before an inevitable betrayal.
While it seems likely Jericho could return to WWE as a babyface initially, some of his best work is when he’s being a terrible person as a heel.

Since Oba Femi and Cody Rhodes have unfinished business, they may be headed for a rematch at WrestleMania 42.
With their match at Saturday Night’s Main Event ending without a winner after an interference by Drew McIntyre, there could be further conflict ahead between Femi and Rhodes.
In the event that Cody Rhodes recaptures the Undisputed WWE Championship in the interim and winds up defending it at WrestleMania 42 – Femi could be a solid choice for an opponent.
Whether he wins the Royal Rumble or not, Femi could become a viable challenger to Rhodes’ title and make his first WrestleMania appearance a massive one.

2. Trick Williams
One possible opponent for Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42 could come by way of a surprise Royal Rumble victory for Trick Williams.
Since Trick Williams has made his debut appearance on SmackDown, he has already stepped up in a big way.
Immediately taking aim at Sami Zayn and interrupting an in-ring segment where Zayn was explaining the personal significance to him of never having won a world championship in WWE – Williams has shown that he is unafraid to be bold on the main roster.
With there certainly being a possibility that either Trick Williams or Sami Zayn could end up winning the Royal Rumble and facing Rhodes at WrestleMania 42, time will tell.

1. Kevin Owens & Randy Orton
While Kevin Owens has been out of action due to injury since before WrestleMania 41, there have already been some major storylines that he has missed entirely.
However, when he last appeared in WWE, Owens was still very much a heel who had unfinished business with the likes of both Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes.
Potentially mixing it up in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 42, there could be an absolute showstopper between the veteran stars.
With all three seemingly shoo-ins for future induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, there wouldn’t need to be a title on the line to make for a compelling storyline.
