People love nostalgia and WWE’s Attitude Era is still burning inside many of us, especially around Royal Rumble season where surprises are around every corner.
With former Attitude Era pillar Triple H in charge of WWE, one would think that he has the softest spot for that period of WWE.
So, with that in mind lets take a deep dive into the decade of MTV, the rise of the internet and anti-establishment movements.
Which WWE stars from the 1990s might make a surprise Royal Rumble return? Here are eight potential candidates.
8. Raven

Quoth the Raven! The former leader of Raven’s Nest hasn’t been seen in WWE for quite some time.
However, to this day he is remembered as someone who brought punk rock into WWE.
Luke Owen’s favourite wrestler represents a change of culture in the 90s and still has a huge cult following to this day.
The record-setting Hardcore Champion could make this appearance to signal a definitive end to his in-ring career, bringing him one step closer to the Hall of Fame.

7. Road Dogg

Oh, you didn’t know? Well, the Road Dogg has been doing commentary for WWE for a little bit over a year now on Main Event (yes that does still exist, if you didn’t know?).
In addition, Road Dogg is still a beloved character with a lot of fans and he’s a great friend of Triple H.
All that, including past Royal Rumble appearances, makes him probably a safe bet for another one if there is to be some Attitude Era surprises in the match.
Although, he might not be the only DX Member to show up…

6. X-Pac

X-Pac has been spotted rather frequently on the WWE program in recent months, with the Hall of Famer turning heads with his incredible physical transformation in recent years.
This, his countless championship runs in WWE, and his close relationship with WWE CCO Triple H certainly qualify him for another opportunity to bust a Bronco Buster on some current stars.
At just 52, X-Pac is younger than R-Truth and only a few years older than the likes of John Cena and CM Punk.
Out of everyone on this list, X-Pac may just be the most likely.

5. Ivory

The former Right To Censor member Ivory is no stranger to Royal Rumble cameos.
Undoubtedly she received an incredible reaction for her work during the 2022 Women’s Royal Rumble.
Why not try for a second time, especially when censorship is still a big point of discussion in this day and age?
The WWE Hall of Famer is a beloved member of the WWE Universe and certainly would be welcomed back with open arms.

4. Ron Simmons

I was shocked to learn that Ron Simmons is only 66 years old. Compared to Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan this icon of the industry still may have some years left in him, despite not competing for over a decade.
Maybe the beloved member of the APA and the Nation of Domination has one more Dominator left in him?
If Simmons really would enter the Rumble one more time, there might just be one word to perfectly describe this: DAMN!
Even if it’s a brief appearance, this one would certainly pop the Indianapolis crowd.

3. Ken Shamrock

Despite being 60 years old the World’s Most Dangerous Man still has an incredible physique.
Shamrock has not been seen and barely mentioned in WWE since his exit in 1999.
Despite being a fixture in Japan over several years it took 25 years for him to sign a WWE contract again last year – that being a legend’s deal.
Potentially that could mean a cameo return in the WWE Royal Rumble and a Hall of Fame induction are on the horizon for the World’s Most Dangerous Man.

2. Stone Cold Steve Austin

Oh Hell Yeah. The most iconic WWE wrestler of the 1990s is of course none other than Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Especially since his one-off return to the ring against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38, we all know that this man has still got it.
So why would the Texas Rattlesnake show up during the Royal Rumble? Simple: CM Punk.
These two share a rivalry that was never fully played out in the ring. The 2025 Royal Rumble just might be where the two finally square off with one another.

1. The Rock

Oh yes, Dwayne The Rock Johnson has made several appearances in the last year for WWE, but he will always be synonymous with the Attitude Era in the 1990s.
In spite of the fact that The Rock might not even show up at WrestleMania, he also told us during his NXT New Year’s Evil appearance that he always thinks two steps ahead.
So, let’s put that to the test and bring in The Rock during the Rumble, where he has to interact with multiple stars he has never interacted with before, while also potentially bringing that inevitable turn against his cousin Roman Reigns.
Unlike Rock vs. Cody, Rock vs. Reigns still feels like it has a slim chance of happening this year, so perhaps we see that set up on February 1.
