On Sunday, August 24, AEW & NJPW are set to present the fourth annual edition of their crossover event, Forbidden Door from the O2 Arena from London, England.

With a month to go until the anticipated crossover event, only two bouts are currently set up for the card thus far.

Here are six potential changes still to be confirmed for the upcoming AEW Forbidden Door 2025.

6. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada Confirmed

Considering that the pair have made plenty of magic together in the ring over the years – it may make complete sense to see them tangle once more at Forbidden Door.

With the match having already been announced as Hiroshi Tanahashi’s last in Europe, there are added stakes on this road to retirement for NJPW’s “Ace”.

After besting AEW International Kenny Omega at AEW All In Texas, AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada became the first ever AEW Unified Champion and does seem poised to defend that title against Swerve Strickland. However, given the history Okada and Tanahshi have, then it seems logical to hold off on that match until after Forbidden Door.

Alternatively, another intriguing option would be pitting two veterans of entirely different worlds against one another in Tanahashi taking on Cope at in London.

5. MJF Signs AEW World Title Contract

Not known for his interest in AEW Forbidden Door historically – MJF has continued to feud with CMLL’s Mistico which could make sense as a potential addition to the card.

However also something to look out for – MJF taking a big opportunity to reclaim the AEW World Championship by any means necessary.

Since it seems MJF has fallen out of favor with the Hurt Syndicate, specifically Bobby Lashley, he is back on his own in his quest to topple current champion Hangman Adam Page.

After Page recently dismissed MJF in a backstage segment as not having the guts to either earn a future title shot or to cash-in his contract for a title opportunity on Hangman – it would seem to foreshadow at least an attempt at using the contract could be coming soon.

4. Will Ospreay Out With Injury

On the July 23 edition of AEW Dynamite, Will Ospreay came to the ring for an interview segment with Tony Schiavone and revealed an unfortunate development.

Ospreay announced that he has been dealing with neck issues ‘for about 10 months’, which included two herniated disks in his C2 and C6 that are going into his spinal cord.

However there was a bit of good news – Ospreay reported his belief that the injury was treatable and that he could be back in action for Forbidden Door 2025.

With a bit under a month to go until the event – perhaps the return of Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door could actually come as a surprise.

3. Chris Jericho Returns

Former WWE Champion, AEW star Chris Jericho

After losing the ROH World Title to Bandido at AEW Dynasty, Chris Jericho would have a TV Time segment where he destroyed the set and vowed to leave.

Given Jericho’s history in both AEW and NJPW, it could make sense to see him make an appearance at the event in London.

With Bandido still holding the ROH World title – perhaps there will be a return of the legendary Jericho in an attempt to reclaim his former title.

Jericho’s continued absence from AEW is beginning to raise eyebrows amongst fans – due to his AEW contract being set to expire at the end of 2025 – so it will be intriguing to see if there is a return at the event for the AEW original.

2. No Gabe Kidd

While it could seem that NJPW star Gabe Kidd would be a shoo-in for a match at Forbidden Door, it seems that he may sadly potentially miss the show with injury.

Kidd suffered an injury to his right knee during the first night of the 2025 G1 Climax Tournament.

Going on to confirm that he was not cleared to compete, there hasn’t been a timeline for a return at this time, despite the English star targeting a comeback during the tournament itself.

Although it is theoretically possible that Kidd could return in time for the August 20 show – it may not be probable, but we shall see.

1. FTR vs. Hurt Syndicate

While the tag team tournament to determine who will face off against The Hurt Syndicate (Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin) is underway – the final could have already been teased.

With Cope revealing that he has hired the Syndicate as his proxies to attack FTR – a showdown between these two teams seems likely.

Given the current direction, it would certainly seem as though FTR could be set to win the tournament, ultimately challenging The Hurt Syndicate at Forbidden Door.

However there are plenty of unannounced bracket spots still to be confirmed – meaning a cross-promotional tag team title bout could end up happening at Forbidden Door instead.
