While John Cena is only scheduled for two more WWE appearances before retirement, a lot could still change between now and December 13.
With several weeks to go before Cena officially hangs up his boots in Washington D.C. at Saturday Night’s Main Event, there are still last minute changes being revealed.
Here are six changes still to come before John Cena retires from WWE.
6. Sheamus Pulled From Last Time Is Now Tournament

Somewhat of a dark horse to end up taking the entire tournament and facing John Cena for the Intercontinental Championship that eludes him — Sheamus has now sadly been pulled from the tournament.
Announced by WWE on November 21, it was noted that Sheamus was set to be unable to continue in the tournament due to an injury to his shoulder.
It wasn’t initially revealed how his replacement would be determined but since Sheamus is not medically cleared — there could be any number of surprise entrants.
With a few intriguing names that didn’t make the list for the first round possibly able to now pop up in Sheamus’ place including Joe Hendry, Ricky Saints or even a returning Randy Orton — the tournament may have just taken a major turn.

5. John Cena Beats GUNTHER In Last Match

A favorite to take the entire tournament is the recently returned Ring General, GUNTHER.
While past pro wrestling retirements suggest that Cena will be ‘putting over’ his final opponent — taking the big loss which in turn makes the other wrestler look strong — it might not come to fruition.
One of the hallmarks of John Cena’s farewell tour has been subverting expectations and also mixing things up.
Potentially with some way that makes sense for GUNTHER to lose and maintain his mystique, it still seems pretty likely that who ever faces Cena last will capture victory.

4. Surprise Tournament Winner

While the field for the tournament has already been set, there could definitely still be some surprises ahead.
Although GUNTHER was previously reported to be set to win the tournament, things could certainly always end up changing with an intriguing number of bouts still to come.
While the final bracket has not yet been revealed, fans know that the GUNTHER will next face of the winner of Carmelo Hayes vs. Bronson Reed in the next round. Solo Sikoa will face off against the winner of Finn Balor vs. PENTA.
With Rusev, Jey Uso and LA Knight all still in contention as well (plus whoever replaces Sheamus), it could definitely end up being someone other than GUNTHER facing Cena at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

3. Austin Theory Returns

Austin Theory was reportedly set to participate in the men’s WarGames match at Survivor Series on the heel team before Seth Rollins was taken out of action due to injury.
With the line-up reported at that time to be Rollins, Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, Brock Lesnar and Austin Theory — things have switched in the interim.
While Rollins and Theory were out, instead Logan Paul and Drew McIntyre are in facing off against an all-star team of babyfaces in CM Punk, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes and The Usos.
Potentially leaving a spot for Austin Theory to return to take over the vacancy created by Sheamus’ injury — we could still see a showdown between Theory and Cena after all.

2. Final Boss Twist

One aspect of John Cena’s farewell tour that will likely be discussed for years to come was his impressive heel run in his final year.
While the topic could be debated by fans for hours, the abrupt switch-up back to babyface Cena ahead of SummerSlam 2025 was quite abrupt.
There is a realm of possibility that the details surrounding the heel turn are yet to be revealed as The Rock or his Final Boss iteration have not returned since the shocking moment at Elimination Chamber where Cena turned heel.
Seemingly a storyline that has been left undone, perhaps there is a reveal still ahead with The Final Boss having one more face-to-face with John Cena.

1. Returns In Less Than Six Months

While December 13 may mark John Cena’s last match in WWE, it is entirely likely that he doesn’t stay gone for very long at all.
Cena has been very clear that he is retiring his in-ring career as well as in-ring persona, he’s never said he wouldn’t continue to make appearances in WWE.
Easily able to make his return to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2026, it would make complete sense to continue to capitalize on the nostalgic goodwill that accompanies the 17x World Champ.
With WrestleMania 42 returning to Las Vegas, John Cena could certainly continue to pull in fans who might have missed this entire farewell tour but are still looking to see Cena one last time.
