After a decade-long absence, AJ Lee returned to WWE programming on the September 5 edition of SmackDown.
Speculation had been building all week, following Becky Lynch aiding her real-life husband Seth Rollins in attacking CM Punk at Clash in Paris, ensuring he retained the World Heavyweight Title.
On SmackDown, fans had been chanting Lee’s name all night, and they were elated when she returned during the main event segment – aligning with her own real-life partner CM Punk to attack Becky Lynch.
With Punk and Lee now aligned, the question becomes: which WWE couples could they face in mixed tag team bouts?
5. Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch

CM Punk and Seth Rollins are locked in a forever feud – one that now involves both men’s families, with their respective wives becoming involved.
WWE’s next PLE, Wrestlepalooza, is expected to host a blockbuster mixed tag team match: CM Punk and AJ Lee vs Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch.
While not yet officially announced, this seems to be the bout that brought AJ Lee out of retirement – a first-time in-ring meeting between top stars from different generations, as the three-time Divas Champion, Lee, squares off against the current Intercontinental Champion and seven-time Women’s World Champion, Lynch.
Given the magnitude of the match, the question is whether this could even trump the likes of John Cena vs Brock Lesnar to be the main event at Wrestlepalooza.

4. Johnny Gargano & Candice LeRae

Wrestlepalooza is set to take place in two weeks’ time, but there are plenty of couples in WWE for CM Punk and AJ Lee to face if they choose remain to remain a tag team beyond that.
If so, there are few better options than Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae
Like Punk and Lee, Gargano and LeRae are aligned in current WWE storylines and a real-life married couple.
LeRae is one of the most talented – and most unheralded – workers on the women’s roster, and would be an ideal opponent for AJ Lee’s comeback run.

3. The Miz & Maryse

One of WWE’s most famous married couples, The Miz and Maryse, have long played heel foils to real-life babyface couples.
Over the years, in mixed tag matches, they’ve faced off against Edge and Beth Phoenix, Bryan Danielson and Brie Bella, and John Cena and Nikki Bella.
Could they add another couple to that list by taking on CM Punk and AJ Lee?
While they have since squashed the problems, Punk and The Miz have had their own real-life issues over the years, making this a compelling potential feud that could utilize those genuine past tensions.

2. Bianca Belair & Montez Ford

For quality in-ring action, few mixed tag options featuring real-life WWE couples are better than CM Punk and AJ Lee versus Bianca Belair and Montez Ford.
Belair is one of the biggest stars and most outstanding performers on the women’s roster, while Montez Ford – one half of the Street Profits – is one of the most underrated in-ring workers.
Given their talent, this married couple could undoubtedly deliver a great match with Punk and Lee, while providing a renewed spotlight for Ford, who years ago was tipped as a future top star in WWE.
While it would almost certainly be an excellent bout – one benefiting Ford’s career – whether it will actually happen remains another matter altogether.

1. Cody and Brandi Rhodes

Few mixed tag matches featuring real-life WWE couples could match CM Punk and AJ Lee versus Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, but one bout that could arguably top it in spectacle is against Cody and Brandi Rhodes.
This pairing is more of a long shot – Cody and Brandi Rhodes recently welcomed their second child, making Brandi’s return to wrestling unlikely in the near future – moreover, she hasn’t wrestled since her last AEW match in January 2021.
One of wrestling’s most famous married couples, Cody and Brandi have teamed before, dating back to 2016 in TNA, though notably, they have never teamed in AEW nor WWE.
While it’s a long shot, this dream match shouldn’t be ruled out for the future.
