The Miz has addressed his upcoming role outside of the WWE, ahead of the reboot of a show coming to Prime Video.
Following on from the reboot of an international version of the show on the BBC, American Gladiators is making a comeback on Amazon’s Prime Video.
As previously reported, The Miz will be one of the hosts on American Gladiators, with the series premiere set for April 17.
Addressing his role as host, The A-Lister compared the significance of American Gladiators to that of WWE when he was growing up, tweeting:
“For me, nothing was bigger than WWE & American Gladiators growing up
“Now Im a WWE Superstar & have the privilege of hosting the reboot
“This team brought their best to honor what you remember & take it to a whole new level
“American Gladiators premieres April 17th on @PrimeVideo”
The Miz won’t be the only wrestling star that fans can expect to see on the show, with AEW’s Wardlow and Kamille serving as Gladiators for the new series, alongside the likes of Eric Bugenhagen, Jessie Godderz and Jessica Roden.
While Wardlow, Bugenhagen and Roden have yet to be assigned a Gladiator name, Godderz will be known as Steel, while Kamille will go by Hurricane.
April 17 is the day before WrestleMania 42, with WWE SmackDown emanating from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on that evening.
American Gladiators will launch with three episodes, followed by a further three on April 24, and the final four on May 1.
Wrestling With The Gladiators
Premiering in 1989, American Gladiators has crossed over with the wrestling world a number of times, with its original host Mike Adamle going on to be WWE Raw General Manager in 2008, as well as a backstage interviewer and commentary partner.
The 2008 reboot would see Hulk Hogan, three years after his first WWE Hall of Fame induction, co-hosting the show alongside Laila Ali.
A combination of athleticism, competition and theatrical spectacle, with Gladiators adopting the heel-face dynamic of professional wrestling, it’s clear why the crossover between the two products exists and why, despite lengthy breaks, the series maintains the status it has long enjoyed.
With stars of AEW and WWE both involved in the upcoming series, existing partnership restrictions notwithstanding, there’s plenty of opportunity for both companies to showcase the cast of Gladiators on their respective television programs.
Beyond the television product, American Gladiators saw a video game back in the early 90s, during the era of the Sega Genesis and Nintendo Super NES, which could be an interesting opportunity for Amazon to revisit should the reboot be a success.
