An AEW star has recalled previous Cody Rhodes plans that he feels would have made “more sense” if given to him.

Years before his return to WWE in 2022, Cody Rhodes enjoyed three years in All Elite Wrestling – serving both as an Executive Vice President in the company in it’s early years, as well as competing inside the ring on a regular basis.

While Rhodes’ forfeited the opportunity to ever become AEW World Champion after his loss to Chris Jericho at AEW Full Gear 2019, “The American Nightmare” did enjoy three runs with the TNT Championship – establishing the gold as the number two men’s title in the company.

During his first run as champion, Rhodes ran an open challenge to talent from inside and outside AEW, which brought about the debuts of the likes of Ricky Starks and Eddie Kingston.

Speaking with Nick Club Wrestling Happy Hour, Brian Cage explained why he feels Cody’s open challenge to unsigned talent would have made “more sense” for him to do during his run as FTW Champion in 2020, given that the title was meant to be “unsanctioned”:

“I thought when Cody Rhodes had the TNT Title and he’s defending against unsigned talent, I felt like that’s what I should have been doing as FTW Champion because it’s an ‘unsanctioned title’.

“So I was like, ‘Oh it makes more sense if I’m fighting unsigned talent’. I don’t know I thought that would just be cooler.”
