The men’s and women’s Money in the Bank matches could herald the next generation of top stars if WWE stays on course.
At the time of writing, all but two competitors for the men’s and women’s Money in the Bank matches on October 10 have been revealed.
A quick look at the stars involved, shows a multitude of newer stars to WWE, with a number being in their twenties and early thirties.
The upcoming episodes of Raw and SmackDown could change the course, but for now it looks like younger and newer stars are the focus:
The Men’s Money In The Bank Match
So far, qualifying for the men’s Money in the Bank match are Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans, Penta and Trick Williams.
Of the four, Penta is the oldest star at 41 years of age, but remains on the newer side when it comes to WWE, having debuted in the company back in January of last year, with the luchador recently facing Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Trick Williams is the current WWE United States Champion, putting him in prime position for a world championship push in his future, while Bron Breakker is one-half of the World Tag Team Champions and a former Intercontinental Champion, also being considered ‘the future of WWE’ despite not being able to end Oba Femi, something that has led to friction with Paul Heyman.
Je’Von Evans is just 22 years old and debuted on the main roster earlier this year, coming off the back of a prominent and popular run in NXT.
With four newer stars already confirmed, this week’s SmackDown will add either CM Punk, GUNTHER or Finn Balor to the line up, adding veteran WWE experience to the mix.
The Women’s Money in the Bank Match
Again, all four names to qualify so far are on the newer side when it comes to their time on the main roster.
Sol Ruca, Lola Vice, Jacy Jayne and Roxanne Perez are all products of NXT. Of the four, Perez is the longest-serving main roster star, joining Raw in May of last year and finding her way into Judgment Day, where she has been one-half of the Women’s Tag Team Champions.
Ruca joined Raw in April and is a former WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion, defeating Becky Lynch. Jacy Jayne was added in the same month over on SmackDown and is the current Women’s United States Champion.
As for Lola Vice, her main roster debut came on September 14, when she qualified for the women’s Money in the Bank match over Kelani Jordan and Raquel Rodriguez.
This week’s SmackDown will add a fifth member to the contenders, with Charlotte Flair, Giulia and Lash Legend all competing for that spot.
The Veterans Have A Place
Veteran stars, be they in WWE or elsewhere, have a place on any show and in many matches, particularly with multiple other competitors. This isn’t to say that newer stars are less professional than their peers, just that there’s a certain level of prestige that the likes of Charlotte Flair or CM Punk can bring to proceedings that may not be there otherwise.
Money in the Bank offers an opportunity to not put the focus on the likes of Flair or Punk, both stars who will go on to compete in the main event picture regardless of the outcome of their respective matches (assuming they qualify, of course). The focus could be on the stars that WWE want to build as main event players for the future, not just in one-off or short programs, but for years to come.
