WWE wild card challengers for Roman Reigns or LA Knight as World Heavyweight Champion

Roman Reigns and LA Knight on WWE Raw

Roman Reigns heads to WWE Money in the Bank, defending the World Heavyweight Championship against LA Knight, but what’s next?

The current World Heavyweight Champion, with an eye on the end of his in-ring career, if there’s been a men’s championship in WWE, Roman Reigns has held it.

While fans will have to wait until October 10 to see if Reigns continues as World Heavyweight Champion or LA Knight claims the title, there are still wild card challengers for either star:

Dominik Mysterio

There are arguments to be made that Dominik Mysterio is being used less impressively than he is over in AAA. A report from early August indicated that the star was ‘frustrated’ with his main roster booking, compared to his AAA run.

Part of this is likely down to his position within Judgment Day, with the faction leaning towards being less serious when compared to the likes of The Bloodline on WWE Raw.

Splitting Mysterio from Judgment Day would be a good start, with the star playing into his “Greatest Mysterio of All Time” rhetoric as he challenges either Reigns or Knight for the World Heavyweight Championship. In both cases, it would be a first-time televised singles match.

Joe Hendry

A former NXT Champion, Joe Hendry is yet to capture a main roster title since being called up in April of this year.

Fans are yet to witness the more serious side of Hendry, but there’s definitely one underneath the adored exterior that could be brought to the fore in the right circumstances.

Such a circumstance would surely be the World Heavyweight Championship, particularly if it’s under the custody of LA Knight. Both stars have worked their way up in the industry to the position they are in today and share that larger-than-life persona that some may underestimate.

While Knight would be the perfect star to face Hendry, the star has a history of facing WWE legends, having been ‘hand-selected’ to face Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41 while still under contract with TNA Wrestling, with Roman Reigns perhaps being the ultimate top star to face.

Austin Theory

Alongside Bron Breakker in The Vision, Austin Theory is one-half of the WWE World Tag Team Champions, a former WWE Tag Team Champion and a two-time United States Champion.

The focus may be on Breakker as the ‘future of WWE’, but overlooking Austin Theory could be what the star needs to break away from the faction, setting his own path to the top championship, despite failing to qualify for this year’s men’s Money in the Bank match.

Theory has no history with Reigns and most recently defeated Knight on the April 6 episode of WWE Raw, with the pair having a series of non-televised house show matches on the European Summer Tour. Building off that run, WWE has a perfect opportunity to bring the rivalry to television, assuming Knight can claim the World Heavyweight Championship.

Pass The Championship On

There’s a sense of prestige when it comes to a championship in the hands of Roman Reigns, but eventually it has to move to someone new and Money in the Bank would be a good moment to switch the title to LA Knight, allowing The OTC to focus on the issues between The Bloodline and the 946.

With LA Knight as World Heavyweight Champion, new opportunities emerge to bring up other stars into a main event program over on WWE Raw, instead of circling the same names.
