The WWE Backlash PLE is being headlined by two of the company’s biggest legends.

In the main event, John Cena – continuing his hate-fuelled retirement tour – defends the Undisputed WWE Title against longtime rival Randy Orton.

With legends already in the spotlight, Backlash could be the perfect stage for iconic names from the past to make a surprise return.

Here are five legendary figures who could show up at the event.

5. “Cowboy” Bob Orton

In the build-up to the show’s main event, Randy Orton’s family legacy has been repeatedly spotlighted.

A third-generation star, Orton has taken John Cena’s threats to “ruin wrestling” as deeply personal, fuming that the industry has given his family everything.

On the final SmackDown before the event, Cena mocked Orton’s repeated attempts to remind fans of his heritage.

These references to Orton’s lineage could culminate in a surprise return at Backlash, with his father, “Cowboy” Bob Orton – a star of the WrestleMania I main event – making an appearance to support his son.

4. Paige

Paige played a pivotal role in transforming WWE’s women’s division, paving the way for female stars to be recognised as serious athletes, but hasn’t wrestled in a WWE ring in over seven and a half years following a serious neck injury.

She made her in-ring return in AEW, where she went on to capture their Women’s World Championship.

After leaving AEW in March, it seems inevitable that she will return to the company where she first rose to stardom.

With Natalya recently telling veteran wrestling writer Bill Apter that Paige has “unfinished business” in WWE, could Backlash be the moment she finally returns home?

3. Lita

The sole women’s match at Backlash is the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Title bout between champion Lyra Valkyria and Becky Lynch.

Lynch’s recent heel turn could pave the way for a major moment at the event – like the return of her former ally and one-time foe, Lita.

A comeback from the legendary Attitude Era star would no doubt electrify the St. Louis crowd.

With WWE reportedly planning a second Evolution all-women’s PLE this summer, now could be the perfect time to set up a generational tag match: Lita and Valkyria vs. Lynch and another returning legend.

2. The Hardy Boyz

With the continuing WWE/TNA relationship, the Hardy Boyz have already made appearances on WWE programming this year, including a challenge for the NXT Tag Team Championship.

They remain closely linked to WWE and are set to appear for AAA – now majority-owned by WWE – at Triplemanía Regia on June 15, alongside other expected WWE stars.

Still massively popular with WWE audiences, the legendary duo seem to be edging closer to a full-time comeback with the company.

1. Goldberg

Speculation has been circulating in recent days about a possible Goldberg return, with the man himself having openly expressed his desire for a retirement match in WWE.

At last year’s Bad Blood Premium Live Event, the former WCW legend was teased in a segment involving Gunther.

Gunther is set to battle Pat McAfee at Backlash, and with both McAfee and Goldberg sharing an NFL background, could the former World Champion make a surprise run-in to aid a fellow ex-player – especially if WWE is planting seeds for a high-profile retirement match at SummerSlam?

Goldberg made his WWE in-ring debut against The Rock at Backlash 2003 – history could be on the verge of repeating itself.
