Rey Mysterio has a plan for his retirement as an in-ring competitor in WWE, which could see more than one of his children involved.
Inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2023, Rey Mysterio is a rarity in that he is also an active member of the roster.
With a retirement run no doubt in his future, Rey Mysterio has recently opened up about how it could look and who could feature in it:
Dominik Mysterio
Mysterio vs. Mysterio. Mask vs. Hair. Father vs. Son. It’s a match that’s an obvious shoo-in to bring the career of the WWE Hall of Famer to an end.
Speaking to The Sun, Rey Mysterio reflected on the possibility of revisiting his feud with his son, an entirely different star to the one that he last faced on television in singles action back in July 2024, saying:
“I think going back with Dom, you know, you’ve seen Rocky, Rocky 2, Rocky 3, and you know, maybe you thought that was the ending? And then all of a sudden you get another Rocky.
“Or the Terminator, whatever it is. Those movies that are legendary and are classics, still to this day you can enjoy. I think that can always happen with Dom and myself.”
Rey would confirm that his “original thought” was that his son would be the one to retire him, but the young star’s “growth happened so fast”, considering how relatively new he was to the wrestling business.
Aalyah Gutierrez
With Aalyah Gutierrez having started training and being on the WWE Performance Center roster, Mysterio would reflect on his daughter’s progress just over a month into the whole process, saying:
“She’s doing good. She’s about a month and a weekend of training in, and she picks up very fast.
“But she also gets very frustrated very easy, but it’s normal.”
Mysterio would look forward to her career as an in-ring competitor, suggesting that she could be involved in an angle with Dominik and himself, too:
“I don’t think it’s ever been done in history, so to be able to share the ring with my daughter and my son, it would be something. It’s a personal hope or dream of mine.”
One More Time?
Speaking to Muscle Memory, Rey Mysterio also indicated that he would be up for another WWE Championship run, although he didn’t set a timeframe for this, stating:
“So, I’m down to have another title run. Just put it in front of me, and I’ll take advantage of it. Trust me.”
In his retirement year, John Cena claimed the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41 to become a record-setting 17-time world champion. Later that year, he would defeat Dominik Mysterio to become a first-time Intercontinental Champion, losing the title back to the Judgment Day member at Survivor Series: WarGames in November, mere weeks before his retirement.
Riding Off Into the Sunset
Very much like John Cena and AJ Styles before him, Rey Mysterio is likely to call time on his in-ring career and transition into another role within WWE. Currently the onscreen general manager in AAA, that’s a role that would likely continue long after he retires, yet it’s not difficult to see the legendary star also moving into a scouting role over in Mexico.
