Here are six potential John Cena plans at WWE Backlash 2026.

6. A Big Club WWE Announcement

Club WWE was officially announced on April 14

As of late, John Cena has become the voice of the new Club WWE recently introduced by the company.

Club WWE is the new insider club for fans of the company that will feature special opportunities, merchandise drops and other benefits.

During his online teases, Cena said that he had something special and “epic” planned for Club WWE members.

Holding to this promise, fans could expect extra incentive to become a Club WWE member themselves with Cena having something waiting for those who make the leap.

5  Special Guest Referee For Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton Rematch

While he did tease something special for Club WWE fans, John Cena could take part in something more tied to the current storylines in the company.

Despite never stepping a foot in the ring to compete, this doesn’t stop Cena from working a non-wrestling role for a bit.

Looking at Friday Night SmackDown, the main feud on the show right now is Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton going to war over the Undisputed WWE Championship.

Following the events of WrestleMania 42, Cena could serve as the special guest referee for a title rematch between Rhodes and Orton at WWE Backlash 2026.

4. Interaction With GUNTHER

While John Cena was there to be the special guest host, many fans believed that he was under-utilized during WrestleMania 42.

Other than kicking off the show, announcing the attendance and his interactions with Danhausen, it felt like Cena would be better used if he were to appear on WWE again.

One notable interaction that did not take place during WrestleMania 42 weekend was Cena confronting the man who made him submit in his final match, GUNTHER.

If Cena is to show up at WWE Backlash for his surprise, “The Never Seen 17” should go face-to-face with GUNTHER at some point during the night.

3. Becoming The Mentor For Danhausen

At WrestleMania 42 Night Two, The Miz and Kit Wilson interrupted John Cena announcing the attendance for the two-night premium live event.

However, Danhausen would interrupt alongside over a dozen Littlehausens. The “Very Nice, Very Evil” star went on to use Cena’s signature offense on The Miz.

Following Mania, Danhausen announced that he is the new “GOAT” after feeling like Cena had passed him the torch.

Becoming Danhausen’s mentor, Cena could influence the next generation of WWE stars and bring the face painted talent under his wings moving forward.

2. Announcing A New Premium Live Event

John Cena’s first WWE appearance after his retirement came at WrestleMania 42, where he served as guest host.

John Cena revealed prior to his retirement from in-ring retirement that he had re-signed a new deal with WWE as an ambassador.

Using Cena as someone to make big announcements would be the best usage for the former 17-time world champion.

Cena’s star power is still prevalent and could lead the company wanting to use him to make major announcements like for new premium live events.

Announcing WWE’s return to a certain country for a PLE would be an interesting way to use Cena, while fulfilling his role as an ambassador for the company.

1. Becoming An Authority Figure In WWE

John Cena wrapped up his 23-year in-ring WWE career at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025

John Cena is someone who demands respect because of what has amounted to being one of the most decorated and legendary stars to ever step foot in a WWE ring.

Despite having a successful Hollywood career, Cena could offer a lot to WWE still even in a non-wrestling capacity.

Cena becoming a recurring authority figure would be an excellent way to use his stature and all-time status in an ongoing way after WWE Backlash 2026.

Whether it be as part of the TKO Board of Directors or just in storyline within WWE, there are ways to use Cena’s star power to enhance every show he is part of and give him more of a role that brings him around quite often.
