Following WWE Raw and NXT, we now know two of the stars who will compete in the John Cena Classic.
On Monday’s (November 2) show, John Cena announced Cody Rhodes as the first invitee for his event which will take place during the December 14 Raw episode in Florida.
The next night on NXT, Cena officially invited Zilla Fatu to compete at the event, with Zilla being the first developmental star to be added to the lineup.
While more NXT stars are expected to be joining Zilla, WWE will likely add several more main roster names to the fold to give the younger prospects familiar and experienced names to work with.
R-Truth
If he’s healthy enough to compete, R-Truth would be a no-brainer pick for the John Cena Classic.
Given Truth’s history with Cena, their interactions during Cena’s retirement tour, and the “We Want Truth” fan movement, this wrestling veteran appears to be the perfect choice for a tournament paying tribute to the 17-time world champion, during which a fan vote will determine the inaugural champion.
There is some uncertainty surrounding Truth’s status, with the star appearing to suffer an injury during his match against Damian Priest on the October 16 SmackDown episode.
If R-Truth does need substantial time away from the ring to recover, there are plenty of other options for main roster stars to compete on December 14, including…
GUNTHER
GUNTHER and John Cena will forever be connected, with the Ring General serving as the 17-time world champion’s final opponent.
With GUNTHER since retiring AJ Styles, and previously being Goldberg’s final opponent, the Austrian star gained a lot of heat by parading around as the “Career Killer”.
While GUNTHER likely wouldn’t leave Florida as the John Cena Champion, given that Club WWE members will be choosing the titleholder, he could serve as a formidable obstacle for rising stars looking to make names for themselves.
Whether it be Zilla Fatu or a yet-to-be-announced NXT name, it’d be interesting to see a young prospect try to take down the man who took down John Cena.
Randy Orton
Following John Cena announcing Cody Rhodes’ inclusion in the John Cena Classic, the retired star had a quick interaction with Randy Orton on the ramp.
With Orton considered by many to be Cena’s greatest career rival, many fans were unhappy about the Viper not being in attendance for the 17-time world champion’s retirement bout.
Following this, we could see Orton pay tribute to John Cena by competing at the event set to honor his legacy.
With Cody Rhodes already part of the confirmed lineup, we’ll have to wait and see what happens in their Last Man Standing match at Crown Jewel to learn more about the futures of both stars.
