Heading into the latter months of 2025, there could be some notable former WWE Tag Team Champions making their way back to the company in the near future.
From those known for their tag team action, to singles competitors that held the titles during their tenure in the company – there could be some big names coming back soon.
Here are eight former WWE Tag Team Champions that could re-sign with the company.
8. Chris Jericho
After losing the ROH World Title to Bandido at AEW Dynasty in April, Chris Jericho made a dramatic exit from TV noting that he wasn’t angry – he was just disappointed.
Seemingly writing himself off of TV ahead of an upcoming set of concert dates for Fozzy, Jericho’s continued conspicuous absence from AEW has kicked speculation into overdrive.
With rumors swirling that he could be headed back to WWE, Jericho himself hasn’t ruled out the possibility.
With Royal Rumble 2026 set for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in January – we could see one of the most surprising returns in WWE history.

7. Edge (Adam Copeland)
WWE Hall of Famer Edge departed the company and went on to take on formidable foes throughout his time in AEW as Adam Copeland.
However, potentially inspired to return to WWE for his own retirement tour in the vein of John Cena, there could be more big moments from Edge.
Although fans perhaps shouldn’t count on it with Copeland mentioning in interviews that he may look to retire at the end of his current contract with AEW.
Fans will have to wait a bit longer to find out however with previous comments on the matter seemingly pointing to the end of his contract with Tony Khan being October 2026.

6. The Hardy Boyz
The legendary tag team of Matt and Jeff Hardy made history again this week, winning the NXT Tag Team titles for the first time in their careers.
Now holding both the TNA Wrestling and NXT Tag Team Championship, the Hardy Boyz look to take on old foes the Dudley Boyz (D-Von & Bubba Ray Dudley) in tag team action at TNA Bound For Glory on October 12.
Hopefully paving the way for a return to the main roster in the near future, Matt and Jeff Hardy could also go on an incredible run in NXT.
With the NXT tag team division rebuilding, it could be an amazing time for new teams and main roster stars alike to be battle tested by the Hardy Boyz.

5. The IIconics (The IInspiration)
Recently appearing on the TNA Wrestling crossover event with NXT called Showdown, The IInspiration (fka as The IIconics in WWE) would be an amazing return.
Currently back in action in TNA Wrestling, the duo have recently captured the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship.
With reports that their contracts with TNA are set to expire sometime in the near future, perhaps the duo will end up re-signing with the brand but continue to make crossover appearances in NXT.
With a raucous crowd reception, it is clear that WWE fans are still very invested in the inspirational and iconic journey of the pair of Jess McKay and Cassie Lee, potentially signaling they could return one day.

4. Matt Cardona
After departing WWE in 2020, Matt Cardona went on to make a complete character reinvention across independent wrestling.
Appearing recently as a part of the TNA Wrestling invasion on NXT, Cardona is already scheduled for a singles bout soon.
Set to take on Josh Briggs on the October 14 edition of NXT, perhaps there could be more from Cardona in the future.
With his real life wife Chelsea Green recently featuring in a storyline with “All Ego” Ethan Page – perhaps there are feuds left in NXT for the former Zack Ryder first.

3. The Big Show (Paul Wight)
One former WWE star that remains under contract with AEW but used in variable roles across the brand is Paul Wight.
After making previous in-ring appearances in AEW, Wight now infrequently appears as a guest host ahead of pay-per-view events.
While his most recent comments in May 2025 noted he was still under contract with AEW, fans still hope to see The Big Show pop back up in WWE someday.
Potentially an amazing Royal Rumble surprise in the future, Wight is also amongst a group that is not yet inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame – an honor that would seem highly likely if he were to re-sign with WWE.

2. Rob Van Dam
WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam could have one last run with the company.
Van Dam has claimed recently that he was contacted about being part of the John Cena retirement tour, but after breaking his heels in a match for MLW, any plans for that had to be scrapped.
However, it appears his in-ring days aren’t over once he recovers.
One final run or at least a final match for him in WWE remains a possibility.

1. Curtis Axel
Many of the Wyatt Sicks’ storylines since the group’s debut have involved targeting people who have a past with Bray Wyatt or members of the group.
For example, they targeted The Miz after he had previously led Bo Dallas (Uncle Howdy) as part of the Mistourage a few years ago.
The second half of the Miztourage, Curtis Axel, made an in-ring return a few months ago after a break of over five years.
A story with his former Tag Team Champion partner Dallas could make sense for a return run.
