While most returning former WWE stars end up back on the main roster, others would be best suited for NXT.
From returning stars that have a built-in storyline currently running in the Performance Center, to another known fan favorite that could be an asset to the next generation — there are numerous former WWE stars that could return to the company but re-signed to NXT.
Here are six former WWE stars that could sign with NXT.
6. Matt Cardona (Zack Ryder)

After making a main roster return as Zack Ryder on SmackDown in the Last Time is Now tournament — there is still a path forward for Matt Cardona in NXT.
Having recently appeared in NXT for a singles bout, it could be the best use of Cardona’s talents to join the NXT roster.
Able to have fun and somewhat silly interactions with plenty of the current on-screen characters, there is certainly already a built-in storyline for him on the brand.
With his real-life wife Chelsea Green having formed an on-screen partnership with Ethan Page, there would be no better performers to have an over-the-top rivalry than Page and Cardona.

5. Nic Nemeth (Dolph Ziggler)

Another surprise entrant in the Last Time is Now tournament to determine the final opponent for John Cena on December 13 was Dolph Ziggler.
Making his entrance under his former WWE ring name similarly to Matt Cardona, Nemeth could definitely end up back in NXT but instead sticking to his TNA Wrestling character.
A perfect candidate to return to NXT and have a storied rise to the main roster, Nemeth’s comeback could prove to be a returning hero story similar to CM Punk and Cody Rhodes.
With a long history with numerous big characters still on the WWE main roster, it would be tremendous fun to see a return that involved some old rivalries as well as new ones.

4. Indi Hartwell

A current TNA Wrestling star that could be bound to return to NXT in the future could be Indi Hartwell.
Released back in November 2024, Hartwell had been with the company for five years and involved in several big NXT storylines prior to her main roster call up in 2023.
While her time on the main roster found her without a storyline to launch her popularity in the same way that she had experienced in NXT, Hartwell still has unfinished business in WWE.
Definitely able to re-sign with the company and go on to have a monster run in NXT, Hartwell’s time at the top in NXT the second time around could definitely be historic.

3. The Hardy Boyz

A pair of WWE legends that could potentially re-sign with the company and spend time in NXT is Matt & Jeff Hardy.
Already having appeared on WWE NXT as a part of the crossover with TNA Wrestling, it could be that the spell in NXT could be inspirational for the legendary pair.
After already accomplishing a lot in their own careers, The Hardy Boyz could find fun in a time on WWE NXT as the tag team division continues to rebuild.
Bringing in such formidable foes to test their skills has already been a positive step for Darkstate, something that could end up proving true for other teams as well.

2. Mara Sadè

After being released from WWE, the former Jakara Jackson continued wrestling and has since been signed to TNA Wrestling.
Being a potential star that would make complete sense to re-sign with NXT, Mara Sadè could get a brand new start as a viable singles star.
While her previous run in NXT was successful as a member of the Meta-Four, it would seem that there are more singles accomplishments left in Sadè’s future.
Able to eventually reunite with Lash Legend on the main roster one day, it would definitely seem that there is more to come in WWE for Mara Sadè.

1. Braun Strowman

One former WWE star that could find himself back in action in NXT might be fan favorite, Braun Strowman.
With his USA Network show about eating his way through complete menus — aptly titled, ‘Everything on the Menu with Braun Strowman’ — has reportedly been a ratings success, perhaps the Monster Among Men would find a role in NXT.
Able to pop-up more as an attraction star rather than a full time member of the NXT roster, Strowman could still be a vital crucible for any new talent to test themselves against.
With the ability to help talent like Oba Femi or even Myles Borne capture a huge victory on NXT ahead of their main roster call-up, Strowman could end up having a far bigger impact from the Performance Center.
