All Elite Wrestling’s first ever video game “AEW Fight Forever” is set to be released on June 29th, 2023.
Overall it can be described as a celebration of the old arcade-like wrestling games like WWF No Mercy.
And just like those older games it is going to be published by a video game company that named itself after the old publisher of such games: THQ Nordic.
At the moment AEW is releasing information for AEW Fight Forever daily.
One of the first criticisms came with the lack of unique match types for the 50+ wrestlers that are going to feature in Fight Forever.
The current list goes as follows:
- Singles
- Tag Team
- 3-Way
- 4-Way
- Ladder
- Casino Battle Royal
- Falls Count Anywhere
- Stadium Stampede
- Unsanctioned Lights Out
- Exploding Barbed Wire Death
This opens up a huge amount of opportunities to add more matches as time goes on. For example…
Trios Match

Trios matches are a staple of AEW TV.
Where in the videogame, they are nowhere to be found.
AEW even introduced a Trios Championship in 2022, currently held by The House Of Black.
The championship has been defended 16 times in AEW history and non-title trios matches basically happen every week.
Let’s hope AEW is going to patch in this particular match type at some point.
Nevertheless, it is not the only tag team match version that is missing in the game…

3-Way/4-Way Tag Team Matches

Much like trios matches, multiple-person tag team matches do happen fairly often in AEW.
AEW Fight Forever currently only features the singles version of this match type.
It appears to be quite a difficult task to program this match type as it took decades to be featured in the WWE 2K series.
However, there is always the possibility that this can change with a future update.

Blood & Guts

The Blood & Guts match is AEW’s version of WarGames.
WarGames itself made its long-awaited video game debut this year with the release of WWE 2K23.
Yet no mention of Blood & Guts in AEW’s take on a wrestling game.
On top of that, it seems like there ain’t no room for cages in this game because…

Steel Cage Match

One of the most regular match types in history is also not part of the game.
In addition to Blood & Guts not being featured, the regular cage is nowhere to be seen in the game.
Men like Cody Rhodes, Wardlow, Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega have competed inside the structure in AEW.
Besides that, the cage is perfect to blow off feuds. This is a must-add for AEW Fight Forever developers in the future.

Anarchy In The Arena

Anarchy In The Arena won’t be featured in AEW Fight Forever either.
The match is basically Stadium Stampede – but with a crowd.
Surprisingly, this match made it into the game, and Anarchy In The Arena did not.
It remains to be seen if they add this match later on, especially with the option “Wild Thing” playing for the entire duration of the match.

Tournament Matches

It is hard to believe you will be unable to book tournament matches in an AEW game.
Whereas in AEW’s television product, there seems to be a tournament every other week.
How could Tony Khan let this happen? Probably just an oversight.
A tournament to crown your first AEW World Champion in the game surely would be a nice touch.
