Currently, AEW has two regular television shows on its schedule, alongside its pay-per-view calendar, and it may not be enough.
Wednesday nights are occupied by AEW Dynamite, its weekly two-hour offering that has been airing since October 2019.
Saturday nights have seen AEW Collision air since June 2023, with that show also running in a two-hour time slot.
AEW’s roster continues to expand, with the recent additions of the former New Day as New Level, at the top end, and it may just be time for the television offering to expand, too:
How Many Stars?
At the time of writing, across both the men’s and women’s roster, AEW has around 200 stars under contract, in addition to other on-screen figures such as managers and commentators.
Even at its absolute most efficient, it would be a challenge to fit even half of the total contracted stars on any given episode of Dynamite. Even AEW All In: London saw over seventy stars compete across the Buy In and main show, and that doesn’t included managers, valets and assorted associates.
Bring Back The YouTube Shows
Cancelled when Collision was brought to screen, AEW Dark and AEW Dark: Elevation were both YouTube programs that saw matches taped at Soundstage 21 in Universal Studios Florida, at pay-per-views or before/after AEW Rampage or Dynamite throughout its original run which ended in April 2023.
AEW continues to pre-tape matches before or after Dynamite when Collision isn’t being broadcast live, with some matches also finding their way onto ROH programming, too.
Bringing the show back to YouTube would allow stars typically not seen on Dynamite or Collision to gain exposure in the absence of an AEW house show circuit.
Finding A Home For A New AEW Dark
Finding a fixed space for the rebirth of AEW Dark could give fans an experience akin to WWE and its NXT offering, with that show regularly airing from the Performance Center.
This wouldn’t mean that the show couldn’t have matches pre-taped around Dynamite or Collision, but it would mean that AEW Dark would have a home of its own, a destination for the fans who want to experience it live in one location.
A New Television Show
In July of last year, Tony Khan said that a third television offering was “always something to consider“, with AEW Rampage having been brought to an end in December of 2024.
Khan has often praised the relationship between AEW and Warner Bros. Discovery, and it may be time to see if there’s room to add another show to the Wednesday and Saturday offerings.
Naturally, with Monday nights occupied by WWE Raw, Tuesday by NXT and Friday by SmackDown, there are few nights that don’t have a televised wrestling show when Dynamite on Wednesday and Collision on Saturday are added to the equation. That would leave Thursday or Sunday.
MyAEW
The recently launched streaming platform already sees wrestling shows, both AEW and independent as part of its offering, and it would be a perfect place to add an exclusive show, whether it be a reborn Dark, Elevation or Rampage.
There’s likely to be some wrangling with Warner Bros. Discovery to ensure that contracts are not breached, but if those negotiations could take place, it’s not difficult to see MyAEW becoming a home to a new show in the same way that ROH continues to operate on HonorClub.
Grow The Show, Grow The Audience
There is a passionate audience for AEW programming and that might translate into a fanbase eager for a third show, bringing new eyes onto the product and seeing stars that they might not otherwise have seen elsewhere, whether it’s Dynamite, Collision, ROH or on the independent wrestling scene.
AEW Collision was reportedly introduced to separate CM Punk from The Elite, who remained on Dynamite, and continues to run despite its marquee name being fired from the company and later returning to WWE.
Dynamite and Collision serve AEW fans well with four hours of programming that gets them talking on a weekly basis, and there are arguments to be made that adding an extra hour or two wouldn’t dampen that enthusiasm.
