The recently retired AJ Styles has shared his honest thoughts on fellow WWE star CM Punk, following two matches earlier this year.
AJ Styles retired at the January 31 WWE Royal Rumble, losing to GUNTHER in a match where Styles’ career was on the line.
Prior to the Royal Rumble, Styles shared the ring with CM Punk on two occasions, first teaming with the World Heavyweight Champion to defeat Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed at the January 20 house show in Brussels, Belgium.
A recent WWE vlog caught Styles during his retirement journey, with the star sharing his honest thoughts about CM Punk after their tag match.
Following the January 20 bout, Styles reflected on Punk’s perception of himself, stating:
“There’s something different about guys who understand who they are, and then they get in the ring, and you don’t even really have to talk, you just freaking go. That’s kind of what that was, it was freaking cool man.
“I’m trying to think when the first time I met Punk was, but I can tell you, it’s over two decades ago.”

The vlog also included footage of the Phenomenal One reflecting following his final Raw match, which saw him challenge for CM Punk’s World Heavyweight Championship.
AJ Styles said:
“What do you want to know? Was it an awesome match? Was it a privilege more than it was awesome? Absolutely.
“To get in there, not only with Punk, but the Heavyweight Champion. I don’t think he understands how much it means to me because we had some rough times, him and I, and it really bothered me, because we were so close at one point. Then you get caught up in your bubbles and stuff like that, miscommunication, it sucks.
“We are living proof of live and learn, forget, forgive, move on. Life’s too short to be angry with each other over stupid things. Me and Punk don’t think a lot of the same things, but that doesn’t mean they separate us from being friends and being appreciative of each other.”

CM Punk and AJ Styles have crossed paths a number of times outside of WWE, with their first match being an IWC World Heavyweight Championship Number 1 Contender three-way match in 2002 that also included Christopher Daniels.
With their last independent match taking place at IWC A Call To Arms 2 in December 2004, they wouldn’t share the ring again until the men’s Royal Rumble match in 2025.
