John Cena has revealed the reason he would speak to Stu, the WWE cameraman, during his entrances throughout the years.
The relationship with Stu the cameraman saw John Cena share a tribute to the WWE name on social media during his retirement tour.
During a recent appearance on No-Contest Wrestling, Cena addressed the reason he made a point of talking the veteran WWE name.
Discussing the unspoken rules of the business, Cena would touch upon the advice of “don’t break the fourth wall”, noting how he doesn’t agree with it as he knows that the WWE fans are watching at home.
With not breaking the fourth wall being a topic that Cena would return to, he would say that the way he did it was to talk to the cameraman, saying:
“How could I (break the fourth wall)? Talking to the f**king cameraman. So I talk over the corner of the matte box to Stu.
“And, I know all those guys: Rico, Stu, Marty, and Stu’s always the first guy I see.
“It’s double-fold. I get two rewards out of this. I get to thank the truck. The production that makes us look way better than we actually are, and they never, ever get credit.
“So, when I thank the camera department or talk to the camera department or the camera department gets recognized, production gets recognized. So, that’s a win there.
“Secondly, I’m in your home. I’m talking to you. You guys know about Stu, and you’re like ‘Stu’s the man.’ It’s because I’ve talked to you for years, and you can sometimes see fatigue in my face, but then it’s like ‘let’s go to work.’
“And, then when you turn, you take away that element. I didn’t know how long I was going to be a bad guy, but I knew, like, take away the energy, take away the Stu, like the little nuances. Wear the belt backwards. Just the little things of like walk, don’t run, take the energy out of the character.
“Talking to Stu allowed me to talk to you guys at home, and I didn’t believe in the rule, so I came up with a creative way to break it. I never got a good explanation, but I thought it was a way to get people at home excited to, like, if you’re not there ‘Stu, can you see all this?’ You guys gotta be here.”

Reflecting on his friendship with Stu, Cena would also consider whether someone else could continue to do what he’s done, stating:
“It was a twofold way. I love Stu. We have such a great friendship, and I don’t know if anyone’s gonna pick up the torch, but it would also be weird for someone to begin to talk to him. I don’t know. But, man, we had like a twenty-year run.”
Cena would also reveal that he doesn’t believe in believing ‘work the hard cam’, explaining that the eight cameras are bound to catch whatever he’s doing, and would use Dublin as an example where there were no fans behind fixed camera due to the venue shape, although he acknowledges the importance of capturing a wide shot.
During the interview, Cena would also touch upon an easter egg from his final match in which he lost to GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
