A major update has emerged on the WWE status of AJ Styles ahead of his match against GUNTHER at Royal Rumble.
This story contains possible spoilers for the Styles vs GUNTHER match coming up on Saturday, January 31, so be aware of that before you continue reading.
The match will see Styles put his career on the line with the advertised stipulation that if he loses, he will retire.
Earlier today, after his match against AJ Styles at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event last night, Shinsuke Nakamura posted a statement – which he has since deleted – on his Instagram story saying that Styles had told him he was planning to retire at Royal Rumble.
In addition to that, another new update has now emerged.
PWInsider Elite reports that they were “told several months ago that Styles would likely finish up before WrestleMania 42,” and Royal Rumble was “one of the choices” for his final match to take place.
Styles announced last year that he planned for 2026 to be his final year in the ring, but didn’t give a specific timeframe within the year for his retirement.
GUNTHER defeated both Goldberg and John Cena in their retirement matches last year and has been given the nickname, the ‘Career Killer.’
