A current AEW champion has revealed that they opted to turn down a contract with WWE during previous discussions.
MJF signed a five-year deal with AEW in January 2019, with the star going on to sign a new contract in 2024.
Speaking to Ross Tucker, the two-time AEW World Champion confirmed that he was approached by WWE before signing his first deal with Tony Khan’s company.
Revealing that the mission statement was what convinced him to sign with AEW, MJF said:
“I got signed at the tender age of 19 to a wrestling promotion called Major League Wrestling. It was unheard of to get signed that young.
“I won many a championship there, and then at the age of 22, WWE came knocking to offer me a contract, and AEW came knocking to offer me a contract, and I went with All Elite Wrestling because I believe in the mission statement of All Elite Wrestling.
“It’s where the best are meant to wrestle.”

MJF’s Major League Wrestling tenure would see him hold the World Middleweight Championship and, alongside Richard Holliday, become World Tag Team Champion.
The current AEW World Champion, MJF is also a former International Champion and held the Dynamite Diamond Ring every year between 2019 and 2024, with Bandido bringing an end to the six-year streak last year.
