Danhausen is a busy WWE star this Halloween, with a third outing recently confirmed for the star ahead of SmackDown and NXT Halloween Havoc.
October 30 sees Danhausen’s Very Nice, Very Evil SmackDown, while the following night sees NXT Halloween Havoc, with the star featured on the poster for that PLE.
More recently, it was announced that Danhausen’s Very Nice, Very Evil Halloween Special would stream on YouTube right after NXT, with the graphic shared on social media stating:
“Spooky matches! Scary superstars! Surprise guests!”
While tying Danhausen to the spooky season makes sense, there is the possibility that this is too much of a good thing:
A success after a rocky debut
First appearing as a WWE star at Elimination Chamber on February 28, it’s safe to say that Danhausen’s debut wasn’t met with a rapturous reception from fans at at United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Since then, however, the star (and WWE creative) has not been sent into a tailspin, featuring prominently on television in a series of increasingly bizarre comedy segments, as well as competing on television, PLEs and the house show circuit.
Danhausen has been deployed into territory that has benefited his presentation, with GUNTHER being the most recent to cross paths with him, leading to a promise to make SmackDown “a very special night for a special boy”.
A creative star shines in WWE
There’s little doubt that Danhausen knows exactly how to win over the fans whenever he appears, with his segments and in-ring work showing all that he brings to proceedings. Not all of the comedy will land with every fan, but that’s the nature of what he’s doing.
Whether it be his involvement with Judgment Day, The Miz and Kit Wilson, GUNTHER or the other WWE stars he has encountered, Danhausen has many memorable moments, suggesting a great hit than miss rate in what he’s doing. Beyond this, he’s sparingly used in televised matches, not to hide a lack of in-ring ability but to showcase him as an opponent when it is needed. Less, as they say, is more.
Less is more?
Less is more brings us to the idea of presenting him three times in one week.
Halloween is an obvious fit for Danhausen, presenting an opportunity to lean into his quirky humor, with SmackDown and NXT Halloween Havoc potentially seeing the star as a host and, by extension, not the focus of the respective shows. This isn’t to say that he’ll probably only appear at the start or end of the show, but it also isn’t to suggest that his wacky ways will disrupt what the stories that are actually being told, despite his presence.
The addition of the special on YouTube offers a different beast entirely, not being a televised product, and offers an opportunity to really push the boat out with Danhausen’s comedic offerings, while seemingly also featuring matches of its own.
Wasted talent
There are arguments to be made that, coming off the back of retiring John Cena, GUNTHER shouldn’t be in a feud with Danhausen, yet here we are. The same could be said of Dominik Mysterio, who faced the star in a Human Monies on a Pole match at SummerSlam this year, with reports around the time that the Judgment Day was “frustrated” by his main roster booking.
One star, three audiences
There will, of course, be a crossover in audiences, but there are likely to be a number of WWE fans who follow Raw and SmackDown and not necessarily NXT or whatever happens on a platform such as YouTube.
For this corner of WWE fandom, the amount of Danhausen to which they will be exposed will be entirely different to the fans who consume all of the content wherever it appears. For the latter category, there’s a chance that this week will present them with too much Danhausen. There’s a possibility that, for some, any Danhausen is too much, though.
