With WWE SummerSlam 2025 set for its first-ever two night edition, there were some notable matches that ended up cut from the card.
From storylines that took an unexpected turn and thereby changed a match to other bouts that had to be canceled due to injury, there were some twists and turns along the way.
Here are eight WWE SummerSlam 2025 matches that were canceled.
8. Alexa Bliss vs. Charlotte Flair

Reportedly, the tag team alliance between Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair was planned on being very short-term. So short-term in fact that the duo were meant to then face off against one another at SummerSlam 2025.
However, after their partnership caught on with fans – particularly at WWE Evolution – they’ve continued on as a tag team.
The change in plans didn’t change their place on the card for SummerSlam, rather just changed the type of match the pair would be in, as instead of facing each other, they’ll be together in tag team action.

7. Roman Reigns vs. Bron Breakker

After Paul Heyman betrayed Roman Reigns to align with Seth Rollins – and later Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed – Reigns has a score to settle with the group.
However, the original plans for the match reportedly would have seen Reigns facing off against Breakker in a singles match.
It seems that there was a shift in plans after Seth Rollins picked up an apparent injury that saw him taken out of the storyline, but Reigns has continued tangling with the faction.
Rather going on to feud with Breakker and Bronson Reed, Reigns has re-aligned with fan favorite Jey Uso as the Bloodline duo will have a match against Heyman’s new pairing on SummerSlam Saturday.

6. Seth Rollins vs. GUNTHER

Although Seth Rollins remains out of action due to injury, there would have likely been a big plan for him at SummerSlam 2025.
Given the way that the opponent for GUNTHER was determined after Rollins’ Saturday Night’s Main Event injury – it seems that the original plan may have involved Seth.
Instead, CM Punk became the number one contender to GUNTHER’s World Championship by winning a gauntlet match on WWE Raw.

5. Becky Lynch vs. Bayley

After her removal from WrestleMania 41 a few months ago, Bayley didn’t make the SummerSlam card either.
With some reports noting that it was originally set to be Bayley taking on Becky Lynch at SummerSlam for the Women’s Intercontinental Title, it would not end up that way.
Instead, Bayley would lose to Lyra Valkyria in a two out of three falls match on the July 14 edition of WWE Raw, securing the match for Valkyria.
Since SummerSlam marks the fourth PLE match over the last four PLEs for Lynch and Valkyria, this may be the end of their rivalry.

4. Dominik Mysterio vs. Finn Balor

After Dominik Mysterio won the WWE Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 41, it seemed as though he would be poised to fight with fellow Judgment Day member Finn Balor.
Balor – who was also in the match and was thereby beaten by Mysterio – appeared to be sewing dissension in a way that harkened the impending implosion of Judgment Day.
However, Balor went on to capture the World Tag Team Championship with JD McDonagh and the group has remained united.
That doesn’t mean Dirty Dom is off the hook for SummerSlam though, as he instead puts his IC Title on the line against AJ Styles in a match that was originally supposed to take place at Night of Champions.

3. Liv Morgan vs. Nikki Bella

Liv Morgan is another WWE star who saw their SummerSlam plans evaporate after picking up an unfortunate injury.
Seemingly poised for a big program ahead of her shoulder injury, Liv Morgan seemed to be kicking off a feud with WWE Hall of Famer, Nikki Bella.
As Morgan was also still holding one half of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship with Raquel Rodriguez – fans latched on to the intriguing prospect of the return of both Bella Twins.
However, instead, Morgan has been replaced by Roxanne Perez in the Judgment Day duo holding the tag team titles who will now face Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss for WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship on Saturday.

2. Damian Priest vs. Aleister Black

With an ongoing storyline between Damian Priest and Aleister Black heating up, it seemed possible that the pair would do battle at WWE SummerSlam.
Instead, they had a match on SmackDown the night before SummerSlam which ended in a DQ after Black threw a chair at Priest’s head.
With still plenty of fighting left to do between the pair, their eventual showdown could still occur at a PLE.
The true blow-off between the pair may take place later this month at Clash In Paris.

1. Rey Mysterio vs. Chad Gable as El Grande Americano

A match that has been plagued by injury is that of Rey Mysterio settling his score with allegedly faux-luchador, El Grande Americano as played by Chad Gable.
After the match originally set for WrestleMania 41 had to be pulled after Mysterio was unable to compete due to injury, it seemed likely to be re-scheduled for SummerSlam.
Despite reports noting that Rey Mysterio could be ready for a return in August, now Chad Gable has picked up an injury and is no longer in competition.
While perhaps Mysterio could have taken on the current El Grande Americano (played by Ludwig Kaiser) – the elder Mysterio was name dropped by AJ Styles on the SummerSlam Kickoff show, perhaps alluding to an appearance by the Hall of Famer at the PLE after all.
