With reports that Bruce Prichard is set to retire from his creative role in 2027, a shake-up of WWE creative is coming, replete with changes.

The Executive Director of Creative Writing & Talent, Bruce Prichard is the most authoritative voice in WWE after Triple H himself and is set to retire after WrestleMania 43, continuing in a consulting capacity.

With recent reports that Shawn Michaels is set to step into Prichard’s shoes, this would leave a gap at the top of NXT, with AJ Styles, CM Punk and Bayley seemingly frontrunners for the role.

With a new focus on WWE NXT, changes could be coming for the brand under fresh leadership:

The evolution of WWE NXT

Founded by Triple H, the show has come a long way from its “8 NXT Rookies, 8 WWE Pros. 1 Dream” tagline of 2010, becoming a developmental product that has increased in significance over the years while continuing to be a pipeline to the main roster.

Briefly known as NXT 2.0, the show continues to showcase future stars while delivering storylines of its own, having brand-specific championships and seeing some of its talent appear on Evolve, itself an incubator for talent.

Since 2022, Shawn Michaels has overseen the creative of the show, serving as Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative.

Change, but not for the sake of change

NXT remains a fresh-feeling product, with the show continuing to focus on a core of stars, introducing new names and seeing the main roster stars make appearances in more than just backstage skits or as a guest host. That’s not to say such roles don’t emerge, with John Cena and Cody Rhodes set for next week’s episode and Danhausen appearing this week and at Halloween Havoc on October 31.

When it comes to the future of NXT, Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Live shared an update on social media that would suggest change is coming.

According to Alvarez, office changes are expected within NXT next year, alongside the change at the top. Who may find their role altered remains to be seen.

The changes go beyond WWE NXT

NXT isn’t the only product that will see change, according to Alvarez, with WWE ID set to get “a fresh coat of paint” next year, too. Again, details were not revealed on what this could entail.

WWE ID is the development program that was launched in early 2024, offering deals to independent wrestling that would see mentorship as part of the arrangement. With its own championships, WWE ID has seen a number of stars compete on NXT and Evolve while continuing to feature on the independent wrestling scene.

It’s not a guarantee of a full-time WWE contract, but it is something of a foot in the door for those involved. As with WWE and NXT deals, however, exits from the program have been seen over recent months.

Bringing the threads together

Under the right direction, 2027 could bring the threads together for WWE NXT and Evolve, keeping them as distinct products but with a closer relationship that benefits all involved.

At the time of writing, the weekly Evolve show is pre-taped, presenting creative challenges for any association with NXT, but that could very well change under new leadership, offering more opportunities for WWE ID stars when it comes to getting exposure.

Triple H and Shawn Michaels have worked wonders with NXT since its inception as the development show that made it a success, and seeing it continue to thrive under new leadership, with a renewed perspective, while continuing a worthy heritage is something that many fans will no doubt appreciate.
