At AEW WrestleDream, fans in attendance were met with a bit of a surprise, those being mysterious ‘tapes’ recorded by ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm.
The former AEW Women’s World Champion has not appeared on the show since March, where she was found laid out backstage by Mina Shirakawa.
There had been speculation about Toni’s return following the tapes being released at WrestleDream, and while Fightful Select says that there are no imminent expectations for her in-ring return, she could be used by the company in other ways.
That begs the question: who killed ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm?
Mina Shirakawa
Prior to her attack, Toni Storm had formed the Timeless Love Bombs tag team with Mina Shirakawa, with the pair coming up short in the tournament to become the first AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions.
Whenever there is a mystery attacker in wrestling, the prime suspect is always that partner of the one attacked, with the reveal often being a betrayal.
Mina has barely featured on AEW television since Toni’s attack, so her being Toni’s attacker would give her a prime spot on the show in a marquee feud.
Mercedes Mone
When asking who could have had the most to gain from Toni Storm’s attack, the most obvious answer would be the woman currently reigning as Women’s World Champion.
Mercedes Mone returned after her own months long absence as part of the Owen Hart Tournament, with her going on to win for the second straight year and earn a title match at All In London.
Mercedes had gone through a lot after losing all of her titles the prior year, which ended with Willow Nightingale defeating her for the TBS Championship on New Year’s Eve.
Mercedes had continuously come up short in her attempt to win the big one, so taking out her biggest threat would have made that a lot easier.
Herself
If there is one thing about Toni Storm, she’s always seemingly steps ahead when it comes to character work.
Throwing herself into the deep end in regards to the Timeless character, she would be the exact kind of wrestler to ‘fake her own death’ or ‘kill’ the old character in order to spark a change when she is ready to return.
Truly the performance of a lifetime.
