Sami Zayn is now a two-time Undisputed WWE Champion, defeating CM Punk for the title on the September 11 SmackDown episode.
With the WWE Title scene being as unpredictable as ever, there are a number of stars who would make sense as the successor to Sami Zayn.
From potential first-time champions to former title holders, these stars could all target Sami Zayn in the coming months, with any one of them ultimately being victorious.
Here are five WWE stars who could dethrone Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn.
Kevin Owens
Following events that transpired ahead of Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship win, Kevin Owens appears to be the first star in line for a shot at the new titleholder.
With Zayn striking Owens with the title belt to cost him his WWE Title match against CM Punk on the August 21 SmackDown episode, the Prizefighter tried to return the favor during Zayn’s championship match on September 11.
Things didn’t go to plan for Owens, who accidentally struck Punk after Sami Zayn ducked out of the way, allowing Zayn to capitalize and win back the gold.
With Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn’s storied history, it would be a full-circle moment if Zayn was the star Owens defeated to become Undisputed WWE Champion.
Cody Rhodes
Sami Zayn won his first Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions, pinning Cody Rhodes in a three-way match also featuring GUNTHER.
Rhodes was meant to challenge for Zayn’s title on the July 6 Raw episode, but was ultimately replaced by eventual winner CM Punk after being attacked backstage.
With Sami Zayn now Undisputed WWE Champion again, there’s still a chance we could see the Zayn vs Rhodes title match which was previously scheduled.
The American Nightmare has briefly been out of the world title picture due to his rivalry with Randy Orton, but it feels like it’s only a matter of time until he’s going to be holding the WWE Championship for a fourth time.
Johnny Gargano
Johnny Gargano was the other star who helped Sami Zayn to become champion, interfering in Zayn’s title match against CM Punk to try to take out the latter star.
Gargano has only been vertical for a few weeks, finally standing up from plank position to unsuccessfully challenge for Punk’s WWE Championship on the September 4 SmackDown episode.
With both stars becoming NXT Champion following major underdog stories on the developmental brand and taking a while to find their footing on the main roster, Johnny Gargano’s WWE career has mirrored Sami Zayn’s in a number of ways.
We could see Johnny Gargano’s WWE run fully rhyme with Zayns, with Johnny Wrestling winning his first world title.
Randy Orton
After unsuccessfully challenging for Cody Rhodes’ WWE Title at WrestleMania 42, Randy Orton remained off TV until the Undisputed WWE Championship match at SummerSlam.
After costing Rhodes his match against then-champion CM Punk on August 1, the Viper went on to defeat the American Nightmare at Sunday Night’s Main Event.
Since August 1, it has felt like Randy Orton has been poised, ready to strike in the Undisputed WWE Championship picture.
With Sami Zayn taking the title from CM Punk, now could be the perfect time for the Viper to attack.
Bron Breakker
Bron Breakker defeated Rey Mysterio and Ethan Page in three-way action on the September 7 Raw episode to qualify for the upcoming Money in the Bank ladder match.
If Breakker is victorious at the October 10 premium live event, he will earn a shot at any championship in WWE, to be taken at a time of his choosing.
While Breakker is currently part of the Raw roster, a lot can happen over the space of the next year, and we could see the Vision member arrive on SmackDown to dethrone the Undisputed WWE Champion.
Having been presented as a top prospect since his main roster debut, Bron Breakker is one of a number of stars who could soon become a first-time world champion.
