Rey Mysterio is the only active member of the WWE roster who has been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
While fans can hear him on commentary every week on AAA on FOX, Mysterio has not been as active on WWE TV as of late.
With WrestleMania 42 approaching fast, Mysterio could be in line for a major match on the card for “The Show of Shows.”
Here are seven potential WWE WrestleMania 42 plans for Rey Mysterio.
7. The Original El Grande Americano
Ahead of WrestleMania 41, Rey Mysterio was scheduled to face The Original El Grande Americano in a singles showdown.
However, Mysterio was abruptly pulled from the Mania card due to suffering a torn groin the day before his match on SmackDown.
Following this sudden change, The Original El Grande was away with an injury of his own when Mysterio made his return to WWE in November 2025.
Now that both men are back and healthy, it makes sense for WWE to run this bout back and have Mysterio go one-on-one with The Original El Grande.

6. El Grande Americano
After The Original El Grande Americano went down with injury, fans started seeing a new El Grande showing up that looked much different.
Now surrounded by Los Americanos, El Grande has made a name for himself on Monday Night Raw and over in Mexico for Lucha Libre AAA.
While Americano has been embroiled in a rivalry with The Original El Grande as of late, he could easily find himself as an opposition to what many fans believe is the greatest luchador of all time.
Following their alliance in AAA, El Grande Americano could be a perfect opponent for Mysterio in a potential passing of the torch at WrestleMania 42.

5. El Hijo del Vikingo
Speaking of passing the torch, many fans feel El Hijo del Vikingo is the spiritual successor in lucha libre to Rey Mysterio.
Revolutionizing lucha libre with his high flying exploits, Vikingo became a standout from Mexico over the past few years and has solidified himself as one of the top stars of Lucha Libre AAA.
The former two-time AAA Mega Champion has recently been at odds with Rey Mysterio after his recent heel turn and joining El Ojo in the company.
Vikingo making his WrestleMania debut would put him on the map and make him someone who can offer a different style of match than anyone else against Rey Mysterio at “The Grandest Stage of Them All.”

4. Rey Fenix
There is someone on the WWE roster who has also been mentioned as a successor to Rey Mysterio and that is Rey Fenix.
Since signing with WWE in 2025, Fenix has not been able to catch fire like many fans thought he would or like his brother Penta on Monday Night Raw.
Back at WrestleMania 41, it was Fenix who stepped up to replace Mysterio in his bout against El Grande Americano.
Now one year later, Fenix facing Mysterio would feel like two generations of lucha libre getting the biggest stage possible to have this dream match at WrestleMania 42.

3. Penta
Over the past year, Rey Mysterio has found himself allied with Penta on several different occasions.
At the AAA Guerra de Titanes 2025 event, Mysterio took Penta’s place in their tag team match against Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano.
Recently, Penta won his first title in WWE when he captured the Intercontinental Championship from Dominik Mysterio on the March 2 episode of Monday Night Raw.
Penta defending the IC Title against Mysterio would be a massive title bout that would fully showcase the lucha libre world at a major stage of the industry at WrestleMania 42.

2. Dominik Mysterio
Back at WWE WrestleMania 39, Rey Mysterio defeated Dominik Mysterio in a father vs. son battle.
Since then, the pair have been feuding with one another on and off, with “Dirty Dom” finally defeating his father in 2024.
While Dominik recently lost the Intercontinental Championship to Penta, it feels like he will still be involved in a major match at WrestleMania 42.
“Dirty Dom” challenging his father Rey Mysterio for one more clash could serve as his retirement match that will feel like a monumental clash on “The Grandest Stage of Them All.”

Over the past year, GUNTHER has earned the reputation of “The Career Killer” after putting an end to several legends’ careers.
In 2025, GUNTHER defeated Goldberg and John Cena in their final matches. Then, “The Ring General” officially retired AJ Styles with a win at WWE Royal Rumble 2026.
After weeks of brawls and fighting in honor of his former tag team partner Styles, Dragon Lee has been feuding with GUNTHER, but took a loss to “The Career Killer” on the March 2 episode of WWE Raw.
Not just winning a match, GUNTHER unmasked Dragon Lee, so this could be seen as disrespect to the lucha libre culture that could lead to Rey Mysterio stepping up to challenge “The Ring General” for WrestleMania 42.
