If WWE were to look to an elite group of former stars to recruit back to re-sign with the company, former Tag Team Champions is a good start.
From legendary icons of professional wrestling to at least one former champ who remains under a non-compete with the company – there are a host of potential returns that just make sense.
Here are seven former WWE Tag Team Champions that could re-sign with the company.
Chris Jericho

While most remembered for his accolades as a singles star, fans could easily forget that Chris Jericho had a total of five tag team title reigns during his time in WWE.
Holding WWE Tag Team gold with The Big Show, The Rock, Christian, Edge and Chris Benoit – Jericho could potentially find himself re-entering the division should he re-sign with the company in the future.
With reports that Jericho’s contract with AEW is up at the end of 2025 – it could be sooner rather that the legend makes his way back to WWE.
Definitely able to take another run at the tag titles, he could reunite with the likes of former partners Kevin Owens or AJ Styles, he could also partner up with a young and exciting talent like Myles Borne or Je’Von Evans.Click the next page button below for more

Matt & Jeff Hardy

The Hardy Boyz remain signed with TNA Wrestling until November 2025 but have already found themselves making appearances in NXT in 2025.
With the crossover between the companies, it is possible the pair of decorated WWE Tag Team title holders could still make future appearances before their time in TNA is over.
However, the duo have recently commented that they would be open to a final run in WWE.
Also hopeful to someday be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame – seeing Matt & Jeff Hardy re-sign with WWE would make complete sense at this stage in their careers.

Braun Strowman

Braun Strowman held the WWE Raw Tag Team titles twice during his tenure in WWE with two very different partners – Seth Rollins in 2019 and Nicholas in 2018.
Nicholas was not a wrestler, rather held the title with Strowman for one day before vacating them. A moment at WrestleMania 34 saw Strowman grab the seemingly random child from the crowd to be his partner before winning a match at WrestleMania 34 against Cesaro and Sheamus.
It was later revealed that Nicholas was definitely in on the moment – his Dad is referee John Cone.
Strowman was released from WWE in May 2025 but it doesn’t mean he won’t be back at some point in the future. Strowman is still set to see his USA Network show ‘Everything on the Menu’ air this Fall – seemingly leaving the opening for an on-screen appearance.

Billy Gunn

Although he has appeared on TV and remained active in independent wrestling – Billy Gunn hasn’t wrestled in AEW since May 2024.
While there were numerous big returns at AEW All In Texas on July 12 – including Austin and Colten Gunn – Billy Gunn was still nowhere in sight.
Although his current contract details with AEW are not known – it would make complete sense for Billy Gunn to make his return to WWE at some point in the future.
With his close ties to Triple H and potential interest in future backstage opportunities in WWE – as he has been serving as a coach in AEW as well – perhaps Gunn could find himself backstage in NXT one day.

Claudio Castagnoli

During his time in WWE as Cesaro (now Claudio Castagnoli in AEW), the star picked up an impressive number of WWE Tag Team title reigns.
Boasting a total of seven different reigns with the titles across partnerships with both Sheamus and Shinsuke Nakamura – Castagnoli stands tall as one of the most decorated tag team wrestlers of the last decade.
While he was recently name dropped by John Cena on WWE SmackDown, it seems unlikely that a return to WWE would be in the near future.
When Castagnoli signed with AEW back in 2022, Tony Khan described the contract as a “long-term, multi-year” deal so a potential WWE return would likely have to wait a few more years.

Matt Cardona

Formerly known as Zack Ryder during his time in WWE, Matt Cardona may already be planned for an imminent return.
Cardona was recently attacked during a TNA Wrestling appearance by the NXT faction Darkstate could be headed for a WWE return sooner than expected.
With Darkstate later calling him out by name in a vignette on NXT, it seems that perhaps the Indie God could be popping up in the Performance Center sometime in the near future.
Certainly the veteran wouldn’t want to let the attack go unanswered and could join the growing field of TNA talent including Mike Santana, Joe Hendry and Matt & Jeff Hardy who have made crossover appearances in WWE.

Shayna Baszler

Shayna Baszler was released back in May but it seems that while her non-compete clause is still in effect – she’s still helping out in WWE.
While it was recently reported that Baszler had been spotted backstage at NXT and had notably been a producer for a recent TV match – it seems she hasn’t made a formal return to the company.
The former WWE star made a dynamic impact on the main roster – highlighted by winning the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship with Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 39 – she arguably still has a lot to contribute.
Switching to a backstage role could always leave the door open for future appearances but also serve as a solid next phase of Baszler’s career.
