There could be some popular names set to return to WWE soon with speculation that there could be more re-signings set to debut.
With WrestleMania 42 fast approaching, there could be some intriguing surprise returns set in the near future from WWE’s past.
Here are seven potential former WWE tag team champions that could re-sign with the company.
7. Braun Strowman

One former WWE star that some hope could return someday, even if for just a short spell, is Braun Strowman.
Certainly having one of the most unique tag team championship wins of all time after winning the title with a child named Nicholas from the crowd – who was in reality the son of WWE referee John Cone – at WrestleMania 34, the belts were relinquished the next night.
Strowman would have another short run with the title when he was partnered with Seth Rollins, an alliance that could come back around now that Rollins is looking to go up against The Vision.
However, recently announcing via the Hollywood Reporter that he is heading up a new venture – a production company called Meat Castle Media along with some entertainment heavy hitters – a return from Strowman may have to wait.
6. Matt & Jeff Hardy

A pair of tag legends that fans continue to hope will re-sign with WWE at some point in the future are The Hardy Boyz, Matt and Jeff Hardy.
After departing AEW, the duo have gone on to work with TNA Wrestling where they continue as mainstays on the brand, but that hasn’t stopped speculation that they could re-sign with WWE in the future.
In fact, both Matt and Jeff Hardy have publicly commented that they would like to return to WWE at least for a short stint before they retire from in-ring competition entirely.
Well received when they appeared on-screen at SummerSlam 2025 in the crowd, there could always be more crossover appearances from the beloved tag team soon that leads to more in the future.
5. Billy Gunn

One legend that fans are hopeful will re-sign with WWE in the future that is still under contract with AEW is Billy Gunn.
A staggering 10-time WWE Tag Team Champion, Gunn won many of his titles alongside fellow DX member Road Dogg in the New Age Outlaws, but he also picked up the tag team title twice with tag partner Chuck Palumbo, and even three times before DX, in the Smoking Gunns tag team with Bart Gunn.
One hiccup in a return story would be that Gunn remains under contract with AEW and details of his deal are not currently known.
While a move to WWE could come in the future, it would be more likely to see Gunn assume a backstage or creative role instead of jumping in front of the cameras, though in professional wrestling, anything is possible.

4. Shayna Baszler

An impressive former champion from the WWE women’s tag division, Shayna Baszler could certainly return to WWE in the future.
While Baszler was a dominant singles champion during her time in NXT, on the main roster she held the women’s tag team championship several times.
Winning the accolade twice with Nia Jax, Baszler is a three-time WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion after also holding the title with Ronda Rousey.
Clearly still with passion for the industry and with plenty of stories left to tell, there could be an amazing return in the future for The Queen of Spades to bring her signature style back to WWE.
3. Claudio Castagnoli

With seven WWE Tag Team Title reigns to his name, Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro) stands out as one the most decorated tag team wrestlers of the last decade.
After signing with AEW back in 2022, Tony Khan described Castagnoli’s contract as a “long-term, multi-year” deal, suggesting that the popular Swiss star could be tied up for years to come.
Particularly with a recent development that Castagnoli has also signed with CMLL and continues to appear frequently in ROH, the dream he may be returning to WWE in the future may need to wait.
However with significant history in the company, it would make sense to someday see Claudio Castagnoli make a return one day.

2. Lita

After a storied career holding a variety of championships in WWE, Lita has even held the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship with Becky Lynch.
A run that would in the end lead to Becky Lynch turning heel, Lita could certainly always make an appearance in WWE for a bit of revenge, and of course, nostalgic fun.
Amongst the other past winners of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, many remain with the company with some notable exceptions.
Winning the title multiple times with different partners including Bayley and Naomi, Mercedes Mone (Sasha Banks) seems to be in the middle of a lengthy contract with AEW, likely ruling out her return any time soon.
1. Chris Jericho

While professional wrestling fans continue to await what moves may come next for Chris Jericho, the legendary star has remained absent from AEW TV for nearly a year.
However, in his storied career he has won the WWE Tag Team Championship with a number of different partners including The Rock, Edge, Big Show and Christian, and it is interesting that he hasn’t captured tag gold in AEW.
Certainly able to link up with any number of partners to make another run at the tag team titles if he were to return to WWE, his contract status with AEW remains unclear with no official word.
With rumors that his contract with AEW could be ‘frozen’, Jericho remains listed on the active AEW roster suggesting perhaps a return to Tony Khan’s company could be just as possible as re-signing with WWE.
