With some promotional material already filmed featuring a set of WWE stars including Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, CM Punk and Paul Heyman with Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque watching on — there could already be some plans in the works for the big event.
Here are six potential Cody Rhodes opponents for WWE WrestleMania 42.
6. The Rock
The dynamic between The Rock as The Final Boss and the rest of the WWE roster has remained a bit murky.
While he notably aligned with John Cena at Elimination Chamber, he hasn’t been seen in WWE since.
Although it seemed as though Roman Reigns was poised to take on Seth Rollins for WrestleMania 42, perhaps it could end up an even bigger bout.
Delaying the eventual one-on-one between The Rock and Roman Reigns, WrestleMania 42 could be a triple threat involving Cody Rhodes.

5. Randy Orton
While Randy Orton has remained a fan favorite babyface for the past several years, it could be that after the departure of John Cena, Orton finds new purpose.
Potentially wanting to chase his own record as a WWE Champion —currently tied with Triple H at 15 wins — Orton might return as a heel.
Looking to overthrow Cody in order to secure his own legacy, there could be a lot of emotional ground to cover between the two real life friends.
With plenty of shared on-screen history, it could end up to be a historic showdown between the two.

One highly underrated legend in WWE is 5x WWE Tag Team Champion Xavier Woods.
While the other two members of The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Big E) have captured major singles victories by holding the WWE World Championship.
With history that literally dates back to high school between the two — it could be an amazing program to flip ‘the chase’ narrative to being a heel wanting to prove his worth.
Leaning on both historical interactions in addition to any current events that might evolve — the pair could tell a legendary story for WrestleMania 42.

3. Brock Lesnar
Already teased as a potential foe for Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42 is The Beast Brock Lesnar.
While several marketing materials have featured a poker table hosting Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes on one side with CM Punk and Brock Lesnar on the other — fan speculation kicked into overdrive.
With speculation and reports alike pointing to a potential future WrestleMania 42 program between Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar, it could be the two are set to have a showdown in 2026.
Since Lesnar’s intentions in attacking John Cena have never been fully revealed, perhaps there more yet to come from that storyline.

One possible challenger for Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42 might be The Ring General, GUNTHER.
With the potential for GUNTHER to continue to rise as one of the top heels in WWE over 2026, it would make sense to see him challenge Rhodes at WrestleMania 42.
Reportedly set to not only win the Last Time Is Now tournament against John Cena but with fans speculating he could end up besting Cena in the bout — it could be the next big test of GUNTHER to face off against Cody Rhodes.

After returning from injury, Chad Gable could go on an absolutely monstrous heel run, targeting the Undisputed WWE Championship.
With all of the perfect elements to create a dastardly foe for the seemingly unconquerable Cody Rhodes, it could be Chad Gable that actually poses the most dangerous threat.
Bringing along the heel faction of American Made (Julius Creed, Brutus Creed and Ivy Nile) there is also another dangerous alliance that lurks for Gable.
Possibly able to unite with the current iteration of El Grande Americano to join forces with Bravo Americano as well as Rayo Americano — Rhodes could find himself against a massive alliance.
