AJ Lee WWE return plans: How & when will we see the former Intercontinental Champion come back?

WWE's AJ Lee at Elimination Chamber 2026

It has now been almost seven months since AJ Lee was last seen inside a WWE ring, with the former Women’s Intercontinental Champion’s most recent match being her loss to Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 42.

While AJ Lee has confirmed that her return to the ring wasn’t originally supposed to be a long-term commitment, she also hasn’t said that she’s done with WWE, and is still currently listed on the company’s active roster page.

With Survivor Series on the horizon and then the Royal Rumble and road to WrestleMania 43 coming not long after that, here are two potential scenarios for AJ Lee’s return to WWE:

Teams up with Paige against The Bella Twins

While this is purely speculation, it feels like if Brie Bella hadn’t suffered a shoulder injury at SummerSlam, we may very well have already seen AJ Lee make a return to WWE TV by now.

Nikki & Brie both turned heel at SummerSlam by betraying Paige, however, due to Brie’s injury, Paige and Nikki progressed as a singles feud rather than what could have been a tag team rivalry pitting The Bella Twins against Paige and a partner of her choosing.

Given that Paige and AJ Lee teamed together to defeat The Bella Twins back at WrestleMania 31, it seemed like WWE could have run that rivalry back in 2026 to deliver a whole heap of WWE Divas Era nostalgia. Of course, providing there are no more unexpected injury setbacks, WWE can always still press forward with this plan once Brie is fit and able to return.

Whether it be at WrestleMania 43, or a lesser PLE event, AJ Lee’s WWE return may be on ice until Brie can make her comeback.

Targets first world championship win in 12 years

While AJ Lee can now say she’s held gold in the modern era of WWE with the Women’s IC Title, fans would need to look back to 2014 for the last time AJ Lee held a world championship in the company.

Winning a world title at this stage of her career doesn’t appear to be something AJ would be desperately wanting to achieve, but her current run would feel a bit incomplete if she didn’t at least give it a go at some point.

With her husband CM Punk now on SmackDown, AJ could jump to the blue brand and set her sights on whichever heel star knocks Chelsea Green off her perch as WWE Women’s Champion.

Or, WWE could even set up a dream match scenario between AJ and the currently injured former WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley, should “The Eradicator” get her gold back.

Checks off several first-time matches

Aside from her match with Bayley on the March 16 episode of WWE Raw, AJ Lee’s return to the company was dominated by her feud with Becky Lynch.

Four of her five matches of this current run also featured “The Man”, and while her appearance in last year’s women’s WarGames match did offer up some first-time meetings in the ring, there are still so many current stars that AJ hasn’t gotten the chance to mix it up with.

If AJ Lee was to step away from the ring for good in the near future, she could go on a retirement tour or sorts and check off the most urgent names on her WWE opponent bucket list.

The aforementioned Rhea Ripley, her wrestling daughter Roxanne Perez, Charlotte Flair, IYO SKY, Stephanie Vaquer, Sol Ruca, the list goes on and on, so hopefully, WWE and AJ Lee can deliver at least a few of these before she wraps up her career for good.
