AEW Replacement For Jon Moxley

Share

AEW's Jon Moxley crossed out

With his current AEW World Championship reign lasting over 220 days, Jon Moxley has long held a firm grip over the AEW roster.

However, all title reigns must come to an end eventually and someone will have to be the one to take down the leader of the Death Riders for the title and breathe new life into AEW’s main event scene.

Here are eight possible AEW replacements for Jon Moxley.

8. Swerve Strickland

AEW's Swerve Strickland

Former AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland seemed like he was poised to be the one to finally take down Jon Moxley at last month’s AEW Dynasty pay-per-view.

This was not to be however, as he like many others fell victim to the Death Riders, as well as the returning Young Bucks.

While there is no indication that Strickland will ever give up on reclaiming this AEW World Championship someday, it still seems possible that he could topple Moxley.

With plenty of closely guarded storyline pieces left to be put together ahead of AEW’s stadium event, AEW All In: Texas, perhaps it will be Swerve who takes down the Death Riders once and for all.

7. Hangman Adam Page

Hangman Adam Page is no stranger to the AEW World Championship, having previously held the title in from late 2021 into mid 2022.

However, so much of AEW and the character of Hangman Adam Page has changed in the time that has past.

Page seems to continue to be propelled by his quest to take down Jon Moxley and the Death Riders, making his way into the Owen Hart Cup finals at Double or Nothing 2025.

While he first has to get past Will Ospreay in the final, it could absolutely be Hangman Adam Page to take down Jon Moxley and become the next AEW World Champion.

6. Darby Allin

Thanks to Darby Allin, the AEW fandom has been educated regarding the exact timeframe it takes to climb to the summit of Mount Everest.

Darby has been absent from AEW since late December – being written off of AEW TV after an assault by the Death Riders – with Moxley wrapping a chair around his neck before shoving him down a flight of stairs.

Providing he’s able to, it would make complete sense for Allin to make his return ahead of AEW All In: Texas to take on and beat Jon Moxley once and for all.

While that spot may be reserved for Will Ospreay or Hangman Page, Allin makes the most storyline sense and the company could decide to still follow through with those potential plans despite Ospreay or Page waiting to challenge in Texas.

5. Eddie Kingston

If there was anyone that could absolutely relate to Jon Moxley, it is Eddie Kingston.

If the Mad King was poised to return from injury anytime soon, he would be a formidable foe for his former friend Moxley.

With fans patiently waiting for his return – he would be a great person to finally end Jon Moxley’s AEW World Championship reign.

Certainly able to tell a very compelling psychological story between the pair, perhaps even if Kingston isn’t the one to take the AEW World Championship from Moxley, it could still be a great program between now and All In: Texas.

4. Powerhouse Hobbs

AEW star Powerhouse Hobbs

If there has been anyone that has taken Jon Moxley to the absolute limit during his current reign – it may be Powerhouse Hobbs.

After falling to injury against Moxley for the IWGP Championship in mid 2024 – he would go on to put on a star making, albeit losing effort at Dynamite Maximum Carnage for the AEW World Championship.

While Hobbs is currently a part of the AEW Trios Championship stable The Opps (with Samoa Joe and Katsuyori Shibata), he may be getting his hands on Moxley sooner rather than later, with Hobbs seemingly set to participate in the Anarchy in the Arena match at AEW Double or Nothing 2025

Although it doesn’t seem to be the current direction of the storyline, Powerhouse Hobbs could definitely be the one to eventually take down Jon Moxley if necessary.

3. MJF

AEW star MJF

The former AEW World Champion continues to be clear about his quest to reclaim his “Triple B” and is hopeful that an alliance with the Hurt Syndicate could be his way to get the job done.

However, it seems sort of likely that on the road back to the top of the AEW card, MJF may first have to go through Bobby Lashley – which is a Herculean task itself.

While it would make an interesting story to see MJF and Moxley tangle again in this decidedly more vicious Death Riders era, it currently seems a bit unlikely.

MJF may be poised to re-claim the AEW World Championship in the future but it may not be from Jon Moxley, but we shall see.

2. Kenny Omega

Mirroring their initial showdowns over the AEW World Championship, the rivalry between Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley is certainly unexplored between these two “new” characters.

With both Moxley and Omega seeing big transformations since having met in the past for the AEW World Championship in 2020 – it would be interesting to see the pair go to war again.

While the title won’t be on the line in the Anarchy in the Arena match at the upcoming AEW Double or Nothing, it seems likely that Omega and Moxley square off when they’re in the ring again face-to-face.

With it being over three years since Omega last held the AEW World Title, it seems inevitable that he’s back hunting for the company’s top prize, whether Moxley holds it or not.

1. Will Ospreay

With a guaranteed title shot at AEW All In: Texas for the victor of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final, there are certainly high stakes.

While the match between Will Ospreay and Hangman Page could certainly go either way – one would argue that Will Ospreay has long seemed like the heir-apparent to Jon Moxley as AEW World Champion.

The Englishman has been AEW’s brightest and most consistently booked babyface star since arriving in the company almost a year and a half ago.

Ospreay defeating Moxley could be the perfect way to end the Death Riders reign over AEW and enter a new era, with a new top face of the company in the Aerial Assassin.
