With AEW Forbidden Door 2025 set for London’s O2 arena on Sunday, August 24 – there have been some changes made to the card.
While there were plenty of speculated matches set for the official show, now that the card is coming together it seems that several potential bouts have ended up scrapped.
Here are six AEW Forbidden Door 2025 matches that seemed likely but ended up canceled.
6. MJF vs. Mistico

While a growing feud between MJF and CMLL star Mistico has been building for awhile, their showdown is not set to come to a climax at AEW Forbidden Door 2025.
Instead, MJF will have a massive match against Hangman Adam Page for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship.
In stipulations added on the Dynamite before Forbidden Door, it was confirmed that the title could change hands via DQ, via count-out but perhaps most notably – MJF is not required to utilize the World title contract he won at AEW All In Texas.
That doesn’t mean however that the score has been settled between MJF and Mistico, rather with the duo set to face off with MJF putting his CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship on the line vs. Mistico’s mask at the upcoming CMLL 91st Anniversary show.

5. IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs. Konosuke Takeshita

One factor that has impacted this year’s AEW Forbidden Door 2025 build has been the proximity to the NJPW annual G1 Climax tournament.
This year, Konosuke Takeshita defeated EVIL to win the G1 Climax 35 and earn a future opportunity at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
Instead, Zack Sabre Jr. will still be putting his title on the line at AEW Forbidden Door 2025 – but against an entirely different competitor.
After winning a four-way match against Daniel Garcia, Hechicero, and Lee Moriarty it is set to be Nigel McGuinness taking on ZSJ at the event for the title.

4. Katsuyori Shibata vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi

With NJPW legend Hiroshi Tanahashi headed for retirement, his match at AEW Forbidden Door 2025 is billed as his last in London.
After previous comments that he would like to face Katsuyori Shibata again in his career, fans got excited at the potential that this dream match could occur under the AEW banner at Forbidden Door 2025.
However, it doesn’t seem that it was meant to be as instead, the bout for Hiroshi Tanahashi that was confirmed is something else entirely.
There is set to be a Lights Out steel cage match featuring Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi, Darby Allin, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Will Ospreay taking on the Death Riders team of Claudio Castagnoli and Jon Moxley, The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson), and Gabe Kidd.

3. AEW World Tag Team Championship: Hurt Syndicate (Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin) (c) vs. FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler)

While the match-up is still happening, the bout is not only between these two teams.
Instead the match will be a three-way tag team elimination match for the AEW World Tag Team Championship featuring the Hurt Syndicate, FTR and Brodido (Brody King and Bandido).
With the addition of Brodido as well as the elimination stipulation, it could be that FTR still leaves Forbidden Door 2025 as the AEW World Tag Team Champions but without actually beating the Hurt Syndicate.
Potentially leaving the door open for the two teams to resume their feud in the future, it would seem that FTR’s next stop is a showdown with Cope and Christian Cage.

2. Saya Kamitani vs. Mercedes Moné

Since AEW Forbidden Door has become known for intriguing matches that may not otherwise be possible, it would have been fun to see World of STARDOM Champion Saya Kamitani taking on AEW’s TBS Champion Mercedes Moné.
Instead, Mercedes Moné will put her TBS Championship on the line at AEW Forbidden Door against AEW’s Alex Windsor, CMLL’s Persephone and STARDOM’s Bozilla.
That isn’t to say though that Kamitani isn’t set for competition soon over the World of STARDOM title.
Saya Kamitani is set to defend against Bea Priestley (formerly known as Blair Davenport in WWE) at the STARDOM TO THE WORLD 2025 event next month.

1. AEW World Trios Championship: The Opps (Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata & Powerhouse Hobbs) vs. KUSHIDA & Jet Speed (Kevin Knight & Speedball Mike Bailey)

Although there are some other AEW Trios teams that The Opps could face at the upcoming AEW Forbidden Door 2025, one team could be a fun play on the concept.
Since joining AEW, Kevin Knight has teamed with Speedball Mike Bailey in their JetSpeed tag team however he has a not so distant past teaming with a NJPW star.
Potentially reuniting with his Intergalactic Jet Setters tag partner KUSHIDA, the trio would have been formidable foes for the current AEW World Trios Champions.
While this match could definitely still be added, it seems that The Opps may just have to wait to face further competition.
